All In: Golden Elite vs. Lucha All Stars Could Be An Instant Classic
All In is a show the likes of which we’ve never seen. The biggest independent wrestling show in history has one of the best main events possible as the Golden Elite take on a who’s who of luchadors, led by Rey Mysterio.
In 2018, there are so many quality professional wrestlers having quality professional wrestling matches that it seems like every other week there’s a new greatest match of all time. For fans, it’s a good problem to have. Cody and the Young Buck’s upcoming All In packs a supercard and will feature the hottest names that WWE hasn’t signed (yet).
With that in mind, at least one match on the show is likely to make the conversation for a GOAT-Wrestling-Round Table.
Pentagon Jr vs. Kenny Omega pits two of the indies megastars against one another in a dream match. The NWA title match between Nick Aldis and Cody has been built to have a big fight, albeit old-school-feel to it.
But then there’s the main event – Kota Ibushi. The Young Bucks. Rey Mysterio. Fenix. And Bandido. The Golden Elite will take on an all-star team of luchadors in what is sure to be an absolute barn-burner.
On paper, this match is huge. With all these high-flyers, one would hope there are prop bets for the number of dives/topes/planchas in this one. Whether you take the over or the under, one thing is for sure – Rip Rogers won’t be happy about the way this one plays out.
But really, he should be. Whether you’re a smarky fan, a grizzled vet, or a snobby journalist, you have to enjoy what this match represents, as it’s the icing on the cake of a monumental moment in wrestling history.
Rey Mysterio isn’t just the biggest name in this bout, he’s the biggest star on this show (sorry, Stephen Amell). It’s only right for this legendary luchador to headline. With rumors of an inevitable signature sending him back to Stamford, this could very well be it for El Rey on the indies. Fortunately, he goes out in an Elite fashion across the ring from an unexpected dream match in Kota Ibushi. For that reason alone, this bout is worthy of the headlining spot.
Kota Ibushi is among the greatest wrestlers on the planet today. Even if you’ve only seen his matches from WWE’s Cruiserweight Classic, you know that much to be true. It’s funny to note that Kenny Omega, his tag team partner, opted to not main event All In after competing in a grueling G1 Climax, because Ibushi worked the tournament as well.
Granted, a singles match and a trios bout require a drastically different workload. Still, it speaks to Kota’s passion and dedication for pro wrestling. So what can fans expect from the Golden Star? How does a gratuitous amount of awe-inspiring and unnecessary neck bumps sound? Exciting? Terrifying? Somewhere in the middle? Ok. Cool. Same.
The Young Bucks are the perfect summation of what All In is all about. The self-made tandem is as DIY as indie wrestling gets. From their merch deal with Hot Topic to Being The Elite, these guys have taken over. Both Matt and Nick Jackson, along with Cody, have put so much work in to making this show possible, that it’s only right that they get to celebrate with a Super Kick Party in the main event.
Don’t think they got here just because they’re the bookers, either. The brothers have proved themselves to be arguably the best tag team in the world. Their list of accolades is incredible: 2,031 total days as the PWG World Tag Team Champions, 7-time IGWP Jr Heavyweight Tag Team Championships, and WON’s Tag Team of the Year for three straight years.

It feels weird even saying it, but given his ability, Fenix is extraordinarily underrated. Part of that can be attributed to the great success of his older brother, Pentagon Jr. Both are immensely talented, but Penta has been the bigger star to this point. At the end of the day though, the “Man of 1,000 Lives” is a former Lucha Underground champion and he’s signed to Impact Wrestling, so it’s not like he’s criminally underutilized.
But, this match serves as the perfect opportunity for this young luchador to hop up on the ropes and dive right into the spotlight amongst big indie names like WALTER, David Starr, and Joey Janela. Here’s to hoping that fans are chanting “Animo!” in the same vein as “Too Sweet” when this one’s all said and done.
Rounding out the match, and perhaps the most exciting prospect in it, is luchador on the rise, Bandido. The 23-year-old Mexican is only just scratching the indie surface, and he’s sure to be the X-Factor in this match. Being the biggest match of his career to date, the new Progress Tag Team Champion is poised for a breakout performance. He’s got the kind of offense that you only thought could’ve existed in a WWE 2K game’s Create A Finisher mode. The Magnificent Bandit has been one of my favorite wrestlers to watch this year, and it’s more than likely he’ll be yours too after he goes All In.
Having said all that, imagine now what happens when these all-star trios step into the ring at the biggest independent wrestling show ever. It’s safe to assume this match will be on par, if not better than the Bucks & Adam Cole five-star six-man tag from PWG’s BOLA 2016 against Ricochet, Will Ospreay, and Matt Sydal. September 1st is less than a week away, who’s excited?
