Daily She-DT: Jordynne Grace Injury, Ruby Riott’s Stock Is Up

facebooktwitterreddit

The Daily “She-DT” feature continues with news about Jordynne Grace’s injury, buzz surrounding Kay Lee Ray with World of Sport, and discussion focusing on Ruby Riott and Becky Lynch in WWE.

On Friday night at NOVA Pro Wrestling’s “Project 4” show, Jordynne Grace suffered an injury during her Powerbomb.TV Independent Championship match against Tracy “Hot Sauce” Williams. Grace is one of the most important names in intergender wrestling, and this was a huge match for that championship.

Grace posted a picture on Twitter of her in crutches, stating that she will rest for six days before preparing for a “huge” October. We’re all wishing her the best in her recovery, and it was good to see her state that the injury isn’t as bad as it could have been.

Black Label Pro announced that as a result of her injury, Grace was unable to compete in Saturday night’s “Darkest Timeline Championship Tournament”.

Seeing an independent pro wrestler get injured is even more devastating, because injuries prevent them from earning money by taking more dates, beyond the simple fact that no athlete ever wants to miss time competing in the sport they love. Grace is always working and making waves, too, so it plain sucks hearing that she’s hurt, and we can only hope that she’ll be OK for her big month of October.

Ruby Riott vs. Brie Bella Announced

The Riott Squad recently lost to the Bella Twins on Raw, and they have made it clear that they view the Bellas as their enemy. Furthermore, the ambitious Ruby Riott has title aspirations, as WWE.com wrote in their preview for Raw that she is interested in making “a play” for Ronda Rousey’s Raw Women’s Championship.

In the meantime, Ruby will face Brie Bella on the next episode of Raw. This match will help build towards the Riott Squad’s six-woman tag match against the Bellas and Ronda Rousey at WWE Super Show-Down on Oct. 6 in Melbourne, Australia.

Ruby has been ready to challenge for the Raw Women’s Championship for months, and I honestly thought she’d be Nia Jax’s first challenger for the title before Rousey accepted Nia’s proposal for a title match at Money in the Bank. On SmackDown Live, the Riott Squad were the focus of the women’s division, as Ruby put on a memorable SmackDown Women’s Championship match against Charlotte Flair at Fastlane.

Rousey vs. Ruby could be even better, and it seems like Vince McMahon has a great deal of confidence in her, given the high-profile angles the Riott Squad have been involved in since joining the WWE main roster.

Becky Lynch Workout Posted By Sheamus

I’m always amazed by the workout routines WWE Superstars follow, because they are incredibly grueling, especially since WWE Superstars have to recover from these workouts while performing in the ring several times each week. Factor in travel and food prep, and professional wrestlers must be admired as some of the grittiest athletes on the planet.

Anyway, Sheamus posted a ring conditioning workout with Becky Lynch, whose widely-watched “eight-minute workout” was already posted by Sheamus earlier this year.

Lessons learned? Don’t call Becky “moody”! And Becky’s circuit workout will leave you GASSED! Like, those kettlebell swings looked intense! It was striking watching Sheamus trying to catch his breath while Becky was just powering onward with pure focus and no signs of fatigue. If you weren’t already impressed with Becky’s stamina, this will give you a whole new appreciation for what WWE Superstars are capable of as athletes.

Viper vs. Kay Lee Ray

Kay Lee Ray defended her World of Sport Women’s Championship against Viper last night, and those two put on another classic on WOS TV. It’s awesome to see KLR and Viper as two of the most important performers on World of Sport, because they have been two of the best wrestlers on the scene for a couple of years now. Their chemistry together is on another level, and I’d also like to point out that they are two of the most underrated promos outside WWE.

The last time these two faced each other, Viper defeated KLR at ROH’s Honor Re-United show in August, making it seem like she would capture that WOS Women’s Title soon. Recall that KLR first won the title at the tapings in May in a Three-Way match against Viper and familiar foe Bea Priestley.

Kay Lee Ray and Viper will be among those touring for World of Sport in January and February of 2019, so this is also big news for both of them.

Stardom On Pro Wrestling Tees

Yesterday, the all-women’s professional wrestling promotion STARDOM opened up a merchandise page on Pro Wrestling Tees. You can view their initial offerings at this link. They currently have three shirt designs available, and I’m just going to go ahead and say that the Mayu Iwatani shirt looks SICK.

Iwatani, by the way, will face Momo Watanbe, who also has a shirt up on Pro Wrestling Tees’s new page for STARDOM, on the 24th in Korakuen Hall for the last day of the 5-star Grand Prix.

Holidead Main Events In Italy

I thought this was pretty cool and definitely worth sharing with everyone. So Holidead tweeted out that she main evented Rising Sun Wrestling “Rise With Heart” show in Milan, Italy last night. This is the first time a women’s match has main evented a wrestling show in Italy, so history was definitely made!

Holidead faced Milan wrestler Jokey, who is a former Italian Women’s Champion.

The “Rise With Heart” wrestling show was done for charity, as proceeds from the show were donated to AIPD, which is an organization in Italy that offers support to people who have Down’s Syndrome.

Free Toni Storm Match

wXw Germany wants you to get hyped for 2018’s Femme Fatales event on Oct. 6, so they released a free Toni Storm vs. Wesna match from last year’s show on YouTube. You can watch the roughly ten-minute match here, but please note that the match will only be up for 72 hours.

This match is awesome and worth your time, especially because Wesna is such a killer. Her chops to Storm in the crowd were LOUD, and she brought a fight out of Storm. At one point, Storm hit Wesna with a running knee to the outside while Wesna was sitting on a chair. There was also a sick powerbomb later in the match that led to a vintage Storm nearfall.

Wesna and Storm would have another big match later, as Wesna challenged Storm for the PROGRESS Women’s Championship in May, marking the first time the title was defended in Germany. And what better way for it to have been defended than at Germany’s first all-women’s show, “Revolution 8”?

Alicia Fox Is Still The Best

The Mixed Match Challenge Season 2 pairing of Jinder Mahal and Alicia Fox was always destined to be good, but who knew it would be a hit after just one segment? Mahal wanted Fox to find her inner “Shanti”, but instead of finding inner peace, Fox was more focused on channeling her inner rap goddess.

Exactly…Fox thought Mahal was chanting “Ashanti”, which, let’s be honest here, is probably a much better strategy for winning matches. It sounds like Mahal could learn a thing or two from WWE’s most fashionable superstar.

Scarlett Bordeaux’s Announcement

Impact Wrestling tweeted that Scarlett Bordeaux has a big announcement planned for the show’s next episode, and it’s anyone’s guess as to what the “Smoke Show” will say next. She’s been the most entertaining part of Impact for the past month, and her genius as a motivator has helped KM and Fallah Bah become integral parts of the show. Heck, thanks to Scarlett’s guidance, Fallah got himself an Impact World Title opportunity against Austin Aries.

The question is, could Bordeaux try to seek her own title opportunities? Is she ready to challenge Tessa Blanchard? It might be too soon for that, but Bordeaux seems capable of anything at this point. She is impossible to predict.

Becky Lynch Is Loving Her Role

More from Daily DDT

It’s hard to think of a wrestler who is enjoying more success than Becky Lynch right now. She defeated Charlotte Flair at Hell in a Cell to win the SmackDown Women’s Championship for the second time in her career, and this came after nearly two years of being outside of the championship picture.

Becky’s character finally took matters into her own hands, and while a few people are still worrying about whether she’s a babyface or a heel, others are more focused on the brilliant story told by both Charlotte and Becky here.

For her part, Becky says she is “loving” the storyline and the reactions to her character. She told the Las Cruces Sun News on Friday that her current story is relatable, because sometimes trying to do the right thing backfires and Becky is just trying to plow through obstacles on her way to being the best possible competitor.

Charlotte On Possible Evolution Match Against Becky

Charlotte vs. Becky is fully expected to go down at Evolution, and you should DEFINITELY listen to what Charlotte told GiveMeSports’s Alex McCarthy about what a title match at Evolution against Becky would mean to her. [H/T to Fightful.com’s Andrew Thompson for covering this story.]

That should 100% be the main event of Evolution.

Celtic Cup 2018

Tomorrow in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Pro Wrestling Ulster will present the country’s first all-women’s wrestling show.

The Celtic Cup 2018 will feature some of the biggest names on the scene, including Isla Dawn, Ayesha Raymond, Rhia O’Reilly, and Killer Kelly.

Above is a tweet from the promotion with the bracket for the tournament.

Women’s Matches At Alternative Wrestling Show

Last night, AWS had its “Yay Wrestling!” show, and there were a few interesting women’s matches on the card. Kiera Hogan and Shotzi Blackheart, who have both worked with Impact Wrestling this year, faced off against each other, and the exciting tag team of Delilah Doom and Leva Bates took on the defending PPRay for the AWS Tag Team Championships.

Peter Avalon and Ray Rosas, who comprise PPRay, are three-time AWS tag team champs and former three-time CWFH Heritage Tag Team Champions. So it’s really cool to see that Bates and Doom, who are the current SHIMMER Tag Team Champions, were in this bout.

Barbi Hayden vs. Vanessa Kraven was another noteworthy match on the card, as Hayden is a former NWA World Women’s Champion and Kraven competed in the Mae Young Classic 2.

Tessa Blanchard Defends The Knockouts Title  Against Faby Apache

There are a lot of bad-ass champions in wrestling right now, and Impact Wrestling’s Knockouts Champion, Tessa Blanchard, is certainly one of them.

Impact announced that next week, Tessa will defend the title against Faby Apache on television, in what should be a marquee matchup. This is a battle that could steal the show this week, so I’d prioritize it in your weekly viewing, even if you can only watch the video Impact uploads on YouTube after the show.

Blanchard has been a revelation since signing with Impact, confirming more permanent role with the company going forward. She’s a centerpiece for Impact now, and with Rosemary on the mend, she is the biggest star in the Knockouts Division.

Apache is a tough opponent, though, and Blanchard may have bitten off more than she can chew by failing to show respect to other wrestlers on last week’s episode. The current (and three-time overall!) Reina de Reinas Champion in AAA, Apache will take Blanchard to the limit.
