NJPW Super Junior Tag League Preview: Favorites, Dark Horses, and Longshots
from njpw1972.com
The Longshots:
ACH & Ryusuke Taguchi
If NJPW wants to completely shock us, this is probably who they’ll go with. These two had an extraordinarily fun run last year and ended up going all the way to the finals. Taguchi is a fan favorite and an underrated worker and ACH has earned the respect of Japanese fans with his last few appearances in NJPW. Still, this year’s field is stacked, and I just don’t think Super 69 has much of a chance.
Chance to win: 2% / Prediction: 3-4 (wins: CMLL, Time Splitters 2.0, 3K)

Yoshinobu Kanemaru & El Desperado
Last year, RPG 3K became the first reigning champs to win the Super Junior Tag Tournament. It made a lot of sense, with SHO & YOH returning from excursion and immediately establishing themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the division. This year, Kanemaru and Desperado enter the tournament with the belts. Evidenced by the fact that their current reign is quickly approaching the record for longest jr heavyweight tag reign, the Suzuki-gun team is already firmly established. There’s no need for them to win this.
Chance to win: 1% / Prediction: 4-3 (losses: Time Splitters 2.0, 3K, BC)

KUSHIDA & Chris Sabin
Yeah, Time Splitters 2.0 are awesome. Unfortunately, they don’t have much of a chance at all here. I’m sure they’ll put on great matches throughout but, in the end, KUSHIDA has his singles championship to worry about.
Chance to win: 1% / Prediction: 3-4 (wins: Despy/Maru, CMLL, Liger/Tiger)

Volador Jr. & Soberano Jr.
This will be Soberano Jr’s NJPW debut, and Volador Jr. hasn’t been seen in the promotion since last year’s Best of the Super Juniors tournament. Also, the pair don’t have any history tagging together in CMLL. Volador is incredible between the ropes and I’m sure Soberano is no slouch either but, unless NJPW has some weird secret plan for them, this seems like nothing more than a filler team to put on fun matches with the rest of the field.
Chance to win: 1% / Prediction: 3-4 (wins: Liger/Tiger, 3K, BC)
