Rey Mysterio Wrestles In Singles Competition Again

The last time Rey Mysterio had a singles match in WWE, he was pinned by Bad News Barrett on an episode of Monday Night Raw in April 2014. In 2018, Mysterio returned at the Royal Rumble in an electrifying performance, looking much younger than 43. He dazzled the audience, popped everyone by eliminating Adam Cole, and looked like one of the standout performers in that ring.

Since then, rumors were abound about the possibility of him re-signing with WWE, which seemed inevitable when he was announced as a special character on WWE 2K19.

Mysterio is officially back, as he fought Shinsuke Nakamura in the main event (OK, technically The Undertaker was the last to go on) of WWE SmackDown 1000 to make his return to singles competition. This will be his final stint with the company, and it will be exciting to watch him for however long this lasts.

After pinning Nakamura in what was a solid return match, Mysterio earned himself an opportunity at Shinsuke’s United States Championship. The two will square off at Starrcade, though it is unclear if the show will finally be aired as a “Network Special” after being more of a house show in its initial return in 2017.

Exciting times are ahead on SmackDown Live with Mysterio back, as he adds to a stacked roster and could even make appearances on other brands. Mysterio is one of the biggest stars in wrestling history, so it would make sense for WWE to take full advantage of his talents, while simultaneously “saving” him for big shows. It’s worth noting that Mysterio didn’t want to return on a full-time schedule due to his knees, which have taken so much abuse over the years.

Aside from his match against Nakamura, Mysterio also had another great moment earlier in the show when he “caught up” with Jeff Hardy backstage. We couldn’t hear what they were talking about and it lasted just seconds, but it was cool to see two legends hanging out backstage during an episode of SmackDown Live in 2018.
