Updated NXT TakeOver: WarGames II match card predictions
Aleister Black vs. Johnny Gargano
Another altruistic babyface bites the dust. Ever since NXT TakeOver: Chicago, the universally beloved Gargano began to hear a spattering of boos and “Johnny Failure” chants filter into the cheers in response to his unhinged actions. After a loss to Velveteen Dream a few weeks ago, it looked as though Gargano was about to enter a storyline where he would slowly redeem himself in the eyes of the NXT fans. Instead, “Johnny Wrestling” went in a more villainous direction as he revealed himself as Black’s mystery assailant.
Gargano is a natural babyface, so it will be interesting to see how he fits into this heel role. At the very least, the matches between these two should be really good. The crowd heat will definitely be there too, as the fans will presumably clamor to see Black kick Gargano’s head clean off his shoulders.
The NXT creative team could choose to save this match for another big show and consolidate these two into the Dream/Ciampa title situation (Black is still owed a rematch after Gargano cost him the NXT Title). However, with the WarGames match taking a number of top names out of the undercard, the bookers will need to get creative when filling out the rest of the show. Plus, scheduling two multi-person matches on a two-hour show might be a bit much. Putting Black and Gargano in a singles match at TakeOver: WarGames II seems like the safer bet.
