3 Reasons Why Daniel Bryan’s Heel Turn Was The Right Move
1. Some of Daniel Bryan’s Best Work Has Been As a Heel
Daniel Bryan has been known for years as an upper-echelon fan favorite. Moments such as his takeover of Monday Night Raw and his WWE Championship win at WrestleMania 30 will forever keep Bryan among the most beloved wrestlers in WWE history. What doesn’t get talked about as often is the fact that between 2012 and 2013, he was a very solid heel.
Bryan’s Money in the Bank cash-in on The Big Show in 2011 kick-started his gradual transition into a conceited showboat. What began as a simple mannerism evolved into the iconic “Yes” chants that are a staple of Bryan’s character today. His continued mistreatment of on-screen girlfriend AJ Lee helped to render his previous run as a plucky underdog almost obsolete.
The backlash from Bryan’s quick loss to Sheamus at WrestleMania helped to catapult his popularity even further. By the summer of 2012, he was entrenched in a three-way war with CM Punk and Kane over the WWE Championship and to a lesser extent, AJ Lee’s affection. His wedding with Lee was even one of the selling points of Raw 1000.
The formation of Team Hell-No soon after was the genesis of Daniel Bryan’s six-year run as a face. With so much time having passed, he has the opportunity to remind people that he is just as good at being a bad guy.
