3. The Revival

There were a lot of valid criticisms of Raw in recent weeks that led to this fresh start and all the associated changes, but perhaps no division was quite as neglected as Raw’s tag team division. With all due respect to Chad Gable & Bobby Roode’s improving tandem, even their sudden title opportunity weeks ago felt out of place. They earned their shot, but the proper work had not been done to truly establish them as a tag team.

That lack of a foundation lessened the impact of their win, and wasn’t helped by the odd booking of The Authors of Pain. Drake Maverick, once known as Rockstar Spud in Impact Wrestling, is truly a sports entertainment jack of all trades. He can compete in the ring, talk on the mic, be a serious general manager, and pee his pants out of fear of The Big Show. Please understand how much I appreciate Maverick, but his presence has only weakened the dominance of The Authors of Pain.

With weird 2-on-3 handicap matches, comedy skits, and various other shenanigans taking center stage, traditional tag teams like The Revival began to slip through the cracks. Handicap matches branded as “Lucha House Rules” against Lucha House Party kept them on television, but did little to properly showcase the practitioners of “no flips, just fists.”

Monday Night Raw’s fresh start led to a four-way tag team match for a shot at the Raw Tag Team Titles. The Revival came out on top against The B-Team, Lucha House Party, and The Authors of Pain to earn a shot at champions Chad Gable and Bobby Roode next week on Raw. These two traditionalists have had a rough patch as of late, but they’ve now got the chance to end 2018 as Raw Tag Team Champions.
