Impact Wrestling: Johnny Impact and Taya Valkyrie Should Be Tag Team Champions

With Impact Wrestling making the decision to air live on Twitch, they’ve continued to find ways to stand out in the wrestling industry. With the first husband and wife duo holding the Impact World Championship and Knockouts Championship at the same time, could that pair be looking for tag team gold?

Impact Wrestling has constantly found ways over the last year to make themselves stand out from their competition. Rather than attempting to copy the formula executed by WWE to lure away their fans, a tactic that led to some of Impact’s biggest struggles over the last decade, Impact Wrestling has instead forged their own path.

They’ve formed working partnerships with Lucha Underground and AAA, allowing them the opportunity to use some of the most popular and talented luchadors in the industry within their own programming. Impact has even changed up their television format, willing to include matches filmed at other promotions that involved their own talent.

Now it seems they’ve got an opportunity to make a new impression in the relatively untapped area of intergender wrestling.

While we’ve seen various independent promotions bring intergender wrestling back to the forefront over the last few years, only Lucha Underground has committed to having it be a part of their television content on a regular basis.

One of the women pushing intergender wrestling back into the mainstream as of late is Jordynne Grace, a female powerhouse that recently signed with Impact Wrestling. If given the opportunity to prove herself, Grace is the kind of star that could find a home in Impact’s respected X-Division.

While Grace’s potential is limitless, there’s an immediate opportunity that Impact Wrestling has the chance to take advantage of. At Homecoming, Johnny Impact retained the Impact World Championship on the same night that his real-life wife Taya Valkyrie captured the Knockouts Championship.

For perhaps the first time ever, a husband and wife are champions at the same time in a top-level company. On top of that, Impact is no stranger to mixed tag team action. We’ve seen Taya and Johnny tag together before, and even saw a mixed tag team Full Metal Mayhem featuring Eddie & Alisha Edwards taking on Davey Richards & Angelina Love at Slammiversary 2017.

While mixed tag team wrestling isn’t the same as intergender wrestling, it is a step in the right direction. Taya Valkyrie herself clearly isn’t afraid to brawl with male wrestlers, exhibited by her attempt to stop Killer Kross from attacking Johnny at Homecoming. She got powerbombed into the third row for her efforts, but will no doubt be back and looking for revenge soon.

Impact Wrestling’s tag team division is as hot as ever, with teams like LAX and The Lucha Bros at the top right now but others like The Rascalz and Ohio Versus Everything waiting in the wings. With a well-timed challenge, Johnny Impact and Taya Valkyrie could join forces in tag team competition to capture yet another championship.

Imagine the reaction in the industry to see a husband and wife as World Champion, Knockouts Champion, and Tag Team Champions all at the same time. It would be a history-making moment and could help open the floodgates for intergender wrestling in Impact.
