Impact Wrestling: Matt Sydal Needs Surgery To Repair Torn Cartilage In Knee

Impact Wrestling has been on fire as of late in part due to the success of the X-Division, but former X-Division Champion Matt Sydal revealed today that he’ll be on the sideline for the next few months due to a knee injury.

Impact Wrestling takes a blow today as Matt Sydal announced on Twitter today that he will be getting surgery next week to repair torn cartilage in his knee. News broke earlier this month that Sydal was pulled from some independent wrestling events due to an injury, but the specifics and extent of the injury weren’t clear until today.

While an exact return date is unclear, he is aiming to be back in the ring by March or April of this year. If Sydal can pull off that recovery, it would put him back in the mix right around WrestleMania weekend, which would be a fantastic time to return.

Impact Wrestling has been heating up more and more since last year’s edition of Slammiversary. Not only was it one of the best wrestling events all year, and Impact’s best of the year, but Matt Sydal played a huge role in the night’s success.

At Slammiversary XVI, we saw Matt Sydal defend his X-Division Championship against “The Machine” Brian Cage. While there was stiff competition for match of the night, Sydal and Cage still put on a spectacular contest that led to Brian Cage capturing the X-Division Championship.

This one match can be traced all the way to Impact Wrestling’s current World Championship scene, as it was that title that Cage cashed in via Option C to earn his shot at Johnny Impact earlier this month at Homecoming. While Cage came up short in the contest, the fact that he had Johnny pinned for a solid count of ten while the referee was down has kept him in the hunt.

Since losing the title, Matt Sydal had continued a role as the mentor for “All Ego” Ethan Page.

That continued until Sydal and Page were pitted against one another in a qualifying match for Ultimate X at Homecoming. Page came out on top but went on to lose at Homecoming.

We last saw Matt Sydal in a chaotic 10-Man Tag Team Match on the January 3rd episode of Impact Wrestling, where his team failed to pick up the win. Depending on the direction Impact chooses to go, we could still see Sydal in the coming months at the side of Ethan Page.

Whether he’s on television or not, Matt Sydal remains an important asset for Impact Wrestling. He’ll be missed while gone, and the company would be wise to set up a triumphant return once he’s healed up. We at Daily DDT certainly wish Sydal a successful surgery and a speedy recovery.
