Women Of Wrestling Deliver A Perfect Debut That Has Fans Hooked

Women of Wrestling made their debut on AXS TV tonight and put on exactly the kind of show that is going to keep fans coming back week after week. From great wrestling to powerful characters, WOW has already become must-see wrestling.

Even if you’re not familiar with the history of Women of Wrestling or the show’s connection to GLOW, there’s no denying the entertaining hour of television they put together this week. From start to finish, every single moment helped bring fans in and show us what WOW will be moving forward.

The current WOW World Champion is Santana Garrett, and they’ve already established her as the beloved face of WOW in a single episode. The night’s main event saw Garrett defending her title against WOW legend Jungle Grrrl. Garrett was in control, but a distraction by Tessa Blanchard cost her the match.

Tessa went after Santana’s dad in the crowd, even going as far as to pull on the tube from his oxygen tank! The distraction led to Santana getting counted out, but everything broke down from there. The Beast made her way to the ring and tried to attack Jungle Grrrl, while referees struggled to keep them apart and stop Garrett and Blanchard from going at it.

When WOW went off the air, there was complete pandemonium and two of the show’s primary storylines had been set moving forward. The Beast and Jungle Grrrl looks like a crazy showdown, and the World Championship rivalry between Blanchard and Garrett already feels like a main event feud.

If you’re not up to date with WOW, some of this might feel overwhelming. What made tonight’s episode truly spectacular was that the influx of new information was so natural from segment to segment.

So often, wrestling struggles to find the balance between overinforming fans and leaving them in the dark. In WWE, a plethora of video packages and reminders from commentary seem to beat things into the skulls of fans like they’re completely clueless and have terribly short memories.

By comparison, there are countless independent promotions that fail to establish and introduce characters, instead leaving it up to the fans to figure things out themselves. While fans of the independent circuit might already know the talents, it makes things difficult for new viewers to get invested and get caught up.

WOW found the balance, and it made the episode fully approachable even from a casual standpoint. WOW provided fans just enough information so that things didn’t feel too confusing, but left enough unsaid to encourage viewers to tune in next week to find out more.

As great as all of these things were, perhaps the most powerful part of WOW is their ability of characters to authentically connect with the audience. We saw a segment showing the origin of Fire, who competes elsewhere as Kiera Hogan. Fire spoke about her past and really opened up in a way that allows fans to connect and become invested.

Fire competed later in the night against “The Governor’s Daughter” Abilene Maverick. The native of College Station, Texas looked exactly as entitled as her name suggests, and she played the role perfectly against the fan favorite Fire.

While Maverick picked up the win, Fire’s effort continued to endear her to the crowd and build her up as a character that fans can relate to and root for. It’s difficult to articulate this kind of connection, which just confirms that fans need to watch Women of Wrestling and see things for themselves.
