Alexa’s Babyface Turn is Weird
The biggest news coming out of “A Moment of Bliss” this week is that Alexa Bliss took the opportunity to announce her long-awaited return to the ring, officially claiming her own spot in the women’s Royal Rumble match this Sunday. This got a pretty big pop from a wrestling crowd that has always loved to hate Alexa and is eager to see her back in action, and if I’m correctly reading the way this all went down we may have just seen Alexa make a big babyface turn.
It was a little awkward for me, though. I absolutely adore Alexa Bliss’s work as a villain, and maybe it’s just going to take some getting used to but seeing her smile and happily give the crowd good news without an ounce of sarcasm in her voice is just not doing it for me. I’ve seen Alexa do the “I just want to say thank you … to myself for being so amazing” swerve so many times that I literally don’t think I can bring myself to believe the words coming out of her mouth.
I’m probably rushing to judgment, especially since I’ve always compared Alexa Bliss to Trish Stratus, and Trish was brilliant at being both a babyface and a heel. That said, I did always slightly prefer Trish’s work as an antagonist and maybe I’ve just grown more stubborn as I’ve aged. But stubbornness in older age is practically unheard of, though, so it’s probably not the issue, right? I’m right.
