While WWE doesn’t always deliver with their pre-shows, WWE Fastlane’s Kickoff Show has been surprisingly good and moved storylines forward with each step. We saw The IIconics interrupt the Kickoff Panel to make it clear they still want another shot at the WWE Women’s Tag Team Titles, and thankfully shut down Sam Roberts while they were there.

Backstage, a petition from Carmella to get R-Truth a rematch for the United States Championship led to a confrontation between Carmella and Zelina Vega. Things got heated for a moment, but Samoa Joe interrupted and was even kind enough to sign the petition himself.

Apparently the signature mattered, because the planned Andrade vs. Rey Mysterio match on the Kickoff Show was cancelled. Instead, WWE announced we’d get a rematch tonight from SmackDown as Samoa Joe will have to defend his newly won United States Championship against Andrade, Rey Mysterio, and former champion R-Truth.

The New Day, specifically Xavier Woods and Big E, took on Shinsuke Nakamura and Rusev to pick up a big win and chart their path to a future tag team title shot. Speaking of those titles, we saw The Miz backstage with his dad briefly and found out that the SmackDown Tag Team Championship match will open WWE Fastlane, so get ready for that at the top of the hour.

Result: The New Day (Xavier Woods and Big E) def. Shinsuke Nakamura & Rusev

Other highlights from the Kickoff Show included: EC3 awkwardly introducing himself to Mandy Rose and being shut down by Sonya Deville, Christian being on the Kickoff Panel, Ricochet & Aleister Black stating their destiny is to leave tonight as champions, AJ Styles complaining that Randy Orton is bullying him, and Kofi Kingston being summoned to the McMahon’s office about the WWE Championship match tonight.
