After the devastating news that NXT Champion Tommaso Ciampa had to undergo neck surgery, we finally know how that will affect NXT TakeOver: New York. At tonight’s tapings, which have not yet aired on the WWE Network, Triple H addressed the situation.

According to reports from those attending the event, Triple H made his way to the ring with the NXT Championship. He’d apparently intended to announce Johnny Gargano would face Tommaso Ciampa for the title at NXT TakeOver, but Ciampa’s injury kept that from happening.

Instead, Triple H announced a Fatal 5-Way at the tapings between Ricochet, Adam Cole, Aleister Black, Velveteen Dream, and Matt Riddle. The match itself was filmed and saw Adam Cole emerge as the victor. With his win, Adam Cole will get to face Johnny Gargano at NXT TakeOver: New York for the NXT Championship.

That alone would have been huge news, but Triple H also announced a stipulation for the match. Adam Cole vs. Johnny Gargano will not only be for the NXT Championship but will be a 2-out-of-3 Falls Match. Fans are already buzzing at the excitement for what could easily be a match of the year candidate.

Adam Cole has remained a staple of NXT since his arrival at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn III in August of 2017. Since his arrival and the formation of The Undisputed Era, Adam Cole and his stablemates have become some of the most beloved superstars in all of NXT.

More from NXT

Despite that success, Adam Cole has yet to find his way to the NXT Championship. The story is very similar for Johnny Gargano, who has been nicknamed Johnny TakeOver because of his repeated outstanding performances at NXT’s biggest events.

The same night that Adam Cole arrived in NXT, Johnny Gargano came up short in a match with eventual NXT Champion Andrade “Cien” Almas. Gargano’s performances, including failed title shots against Tommaso Ciampa and Andrade on separate occasions, have made him one of TakeOver’s most must-see participants.

Now with the news that Johnny Gargano will be in a 2-out-of-3 Falls Match against another ring veteran, Adam Cole, fans can look forward to a match for the ages at NXT TakeOver: New York.
