WWE SummerSlam 2019: Match Card Predictions After WrestleMania 35
By Bryan Heaton
Cruiserweight Championship Match: Tony Nese (c) vs. Cedric Alexander (Kickoff Show)
I don’t know if this match would be a face vs. face match, or if either superstar would be a heel by this point, but I feel like Alexander is sort of the measuring stick for Cruiserweight Champions. Not necessarily that he was the best of the bunch, but all who hold the title have to go through him. He’s like the John Cena of 205 Live, I guess.
When Nese won the Cruiserweight Championship at WrestleMania 35, it initially felt like a “hometown hero” kind of thing. But on further thought, I think The Premier Athlete may be getting settled into a somewhat lengthy reign. Besides Akira Tozawa’s six-day reign and some goofiness with Enzo Amore and Kalisto, most Cruiserweight Champions have reigned for at least a month or more.
Nese fended off most of his former associates en route to earning his title shot at Mania, so at WWE SummerSlam 2019 I think he’s more likely to face someone new. Who better than a former champion who’s beloved by the fan base?
It would also tie up a few loose ends in storyline: 205 Live GM Drake Maverick had once told Alexander he wouldn’t get another title shot until he was “ready.” He ultimately recieved a rematch with Buddy Murphy at TLC but lost, so maybe he wasn’t really ready. Plus, Nese defeated Alexander n the finals of the number one contender’s tournament heading into WrestleMania — maybe some payback is in store?
If all else fails, it would be a hell of a match to close out the SummerSlam Kickoff Show, and it would definitely hype the crowd for the main card.
