Sonya Deville

With her devastating strikes, strong promos, and nasty submissions on the ropes, Sonya Deville stands out in the SmackDown Women’s Division and has built a quiet army of fans who are just waiting to cheer forcefully once WWE turns to Sonya with a mini-push. Deville is so important for LGBT representation as the first openly lesbian wrestler on the main roster, and there are so many fans just waiting to beam with pride when they see Deville holding a major title in WWE.

But it isn’t just about representation: Deville, of course, has all the tools to be a champion. Deville first started to show her talent in late 2017 with a feud in NXT against Ruby Riott, before both women joined the WWE main roster.

Since that strong series of matches, Deville has only gotten better in the ring, and fans have been waiting for a lengthy match between her and Asuka or her and Becky Lynch. Hopefully WWE starts giving her more time in the ring, because that’s where she stands out as a tenacious, technical competitor. Deville is also quite creative in the ring, and there’s opportunities for some call-backs if she gets a 10-15 minute title match with Becky.

Deville’s relationship with Mandy Rose, which has been tense at times, is worth monitoring here, too, because some, such as colleague Kristen Ashly, feel that Sonya would benefit greatly from being on her own; it’s hard to disagree with that belief.
