WWE Extreme Rules 2019: Preview and predictions
Drew Gulak (c) vs. Tony Nese – Cruiserweight Championship
Walking into his first PPV title defense since winning the Cruiserweight Title a couple weeks back at Stomping Grounds, Drew Gulak is a day removed from his loss at his actual wrestling stomping grounds, Evolve, in his match with Matt Riddle. He needs to bounce back with a big win on PPV. Not only because a win in itself will be big, but it’ll be a win over long time rival and former Cruiserweight Champion, Tony Nese, who Gulak failed to pin at the last PPV to win the title.
To prove his worth as a champion, not only should Gulak win, he needs to win.
Prediction: Gulak
Bayley (c) vs. Nikki Cross and Alexa Bliss – Handicap Match – SmackDown Women’s Championship
This one can go in so many places. Lots of story potential here. Bayley could retain and cause friction between Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross. Cross could win, causing friction with Bliss because the latter wants all the glory for herself. Bliss could get the pin and crush Cross’ dreams to be co-Champion when Bliss insists on keeping the glory and the title all for herself. You see where I’m going with this?
No matter how this match ends, it’s hard for me to imagine Bliss and Cross remaining a cohesive unit when the bell rings at the end. A part of me is leaning towards Cross winning, but it’s a bit too soon for her to win the title so soon into her career, even if she does wind up being a co-SmackDown Women’s Champion. Another part of me is thinking Bliss, but given she’s been dealing with an undisclosed sickness, apparently, that might rule her out.
So many options that provide some fascinating, incredible storytelling opportunities, but I’ll go with the most logical one: Bayley winning. Especially since I feel like it’s too soon for her reign to end. Maybe a certain purple haired bestie storms down to even the odds?
Prediction: Bayley
