WWE Sasha Banks vs. Becky Lynch must headline Clash of Champions
Sasha Banks vs. Becky Lynch is the biggest story in WWE heading into Clash of Champions and should be the main event of the evening.
Monday Night Raw ended with a moment that many had called for, but few had anticipated as Bayley smashed Becky Lynch with a steel chair, joining her friend Sasha Banks in the category known as “heel.” The creepy smile that they shared excited fans in the arena and watching at home. The Lynch vs. Banks angle was already one of the hottest angles in the WWE and after this Monday, it’s clear that these two women should headline the upcoming Clash of Champions.
When the WWE logo flashed on camera on Monday, the closing image was Bayley rearing back to hit Lynch over and over again while Banks leaned back in the corner smiling. Questions abound as to this new dynamic and how it will impact Bayley’s run on SmackDown Live where she’s scheduled to face Charlotte Flair (who is also a heel) at Clash of Champions.
That’s an issue for WWE Creative to book themselves out from under, but the focus for this PPV needs to be on Banks and Lynch above all else.
For four months, Banks was one of the most important talking points throughout the wrestling media; especially within WWE. Fans wondered if she’d quit the organization as media members attempted to out-scoop each other as they reported on her return. All the while, Banks was posting cryptic pictures and messages across social media.
No one had any idea what was going on until her return a few weeks ago. But it was her time away that reminded many people that Banks as a heel is a big star and she’s the true foil to Lynch as the man – especially after many became tired of the Lynch vs. Flair storyline. Flair has headlined major PPVs with both Lynch and Banks; so, this is the best time to continue that positive trend with Banks and Lynch at the forefront.
From a marketing standpoint, Lynch and Banks are the two biggest stars on the roster. From a comparison sake, look at the Instagram numbers for Lynch and Banks, compared to Braun Strowman, Seth Rollins, Randy Orton and Kofi Kingston. Between the four men battling over the WWE Universal and WWE Championship, they have a combined 11.1 million followers in Instagram.
Banks and Lynch have a combined 8.4 million between just the two of them. Let’s look at one other metric: Google search results. Rollins leads the men with more than 23 million current searches in Google. Lynch has 32 million of her own, but all of them pale in comparison to Banks who has 218 million Google search results – smashing the competition.
Banks had long had the ability to be the crossover star that the women’s division needed. WWE Creative has botched much of her time on the main roster, putting other women ahead of her time and time again. While some may not have agreed with her response to walk away and go home – there are others like Neville, now known as Pac, who used that same practice to positive results.
Banks knew her worth from day one and put a stake in the ground to get that worth. Now, the fan reaction to her return and the potential impact of the story seeing Bayley turn heel shows how important she is to this women’s roster.
With 12 days remaining, Clash of Champions is shaping up to be a strong card. It is very difficult for anyone to argue that any other story is bigger than Banks vs. Lynch. WWE Creative should not allow these two to have any physical interactions until this match on September 15 and that match should be the last of the evening to properly reflect their position in the company.
