WWE: Everything you need to know about Dio Maddin
Dio Maddin has been dubbed the newest WWE commentator for 205 Live. Here is everything you need to know about the occasional wrestler and self-proclaimed Sultan of Sit.
Last Tuesday, during WWE’s most exciting hour of television, 205 Live’s commentary table was shaken up a bit. In light of NXT moving to USA Network for weekly live television, Nigel McGuiness has to commit to the black and gold brand full time. Therefore, the purple brand will no longer be gifted with his British sensibilities going forward.
However, in his place at the commentary table next to Vic Joseph, his chair has been filled by one Dio Maddin. Many viewers may not be familiar with the lad, but I am here to educate you on the young upstart.
Born out of North Easton, Massachusetts, the 28-year old was actually born as Brennan Williams. At 6’7 and 286lb, he was always bound to be a natural athlete, but originally, he found his footing in the sports world as a footballer. While playing high school football at Catholic Memorial, he was ranked as one of the best offensive linemen in the country by multiple scouting publications. It came as no surprise when he was picked 89th overall by the Houston Texans in the 2013 NFL Draft.
Unfortunately, his NFL career as an offensive tackle didn’t pan out with staggering success. He never played in a regular season game as his rookie season saw Williams undergo a microfracture surgery on his knee. Over the next two years, he’d hop around to the Jacksonville Jaguars and then the New England Patriots. While he was part of their practice squad, he never played a regular season game for either team before walking away from the NFL.
This is when he decided to start anew in professional wrestling.
It was in October 2015 that he trained under Booker T at his Reality of Wrestling school. He began performing under the name Marcellus Black and made his official in-ring debut in February 2016. It didn’t take long before he started to impress audiences and critics. That same month, he competed in a tryout with WWE. By the end of the summer, Williams had signed a WWE contract and reported to the Performance Center.
While he has yet to make his televised debut on NXT programming or a televised debut on any WWE program for that matter, he has appeared frequently on NXT house shows since his signing, where he continues to hone his craft as an in-ring competitor and a character. He gained a bit of attention and online popularity when he started dubbing himself “The Sultan of Sit,” where he’d make a huge in-ring spectacle out of just sitting down in the corner (Raven style), which often inspired “Holy Sit!” chants from the crowd.
It’s also worth noting that when he’s not wrestling, Williams plays video games on his Twitch channel, which he launched last fall. There, he often plays games alongside WWE Superstars like Dominik Dijakovic, Mansoor and Killian Dain.
It was only last June that Williams was rechristened as Dio Maddin. Now, he has joined the 205 Live commentary booth, which should be a great fit going forward given Maddin’s charisma and sharp wit. Now, it’s only a matter of time before we actually, finally see Maddin inside of a WWE ring.
Obviously, Maddin is well above the 205lb limit for the purple brand, but with NXT on USA Network, don’t be surprised if he pops up as one of the roster’s newest faces.
9/26/2019 UPDATE: Today, WWE has revealed Maddin as one of Raw’s newest commentators. Congratulations to Dio Maddin on the promotion and we’re excited to see what he can do on the red brand!
