Southside Wrestling Situation

According to PWInsider.com’s Mike Johnson, WWE pulled their NXT UK superstars, including big names like Kay Lee Ray and El Ligero, from the Oct. 26 Southside Wrestling farewell show.

Many people assumed – and worried – that this was a huge power play from NXT UK and WWE, but Johnson reports that those backstage relayed it was out of fear for the working environment.

This is because Southside is going to merge with RevPro after Oct. 26, and RevPro recently had an incident in which wrestlers upset with a finish decided to “shoot” on an official and beat them.

So it seems to have nothing to do with a desire to squash the UK indies or avoid RevPro due to their partnership with NJPW. They want to keep their wrestlers safe, and don’t trust RevPro.

Whether or not you believe this explanation is up to you, since you could argue that this situation could happen at other promotions or that the fault wasn’t RevPro, but the wrestlers themselves.

AEW have taken this opportunity to generate some goodwill, as they will be helping Southside out.

Cody Rhodes and Brandi Rhodes will appear at the show to help the promotion say goodbye to its fans, and Shawn Spears and MJF will be two big stars appearing at the show.

That’s great stuff from AEW, and hopefully Southside’s show goes swimmingly well. It’s sad to see them close though, and it’s also unfortunate that, for whatever reason, WWE had to pull some great talents from the card.

Given the risks involved in booking their talent at shows that aren’t their own, I’m inclined to believe their side of the story; after what happened at a recent RevPro event, they felt they couldn’t take the risk. But if your opinion is more cynical, I can more than understand that perspective, given what is happening in the UK scene.
