John Morrison’s 4 best matches during his WWE career
John Morrison’s birthday is today, which got us thinking more about his WWE career and the best matches he had during his original run there.
Rumors have run rampant as of late that John Morrison has re-signed with the WWE. Rumors which, judging by some more recent comments from Morrison himself, may not be true after all. Whether he winds up back in those waters or not, all of these reports have gotten a lot of us nostalgic for Morrison’s time during those greener pastures.
A man of many names (Johnny Nitro, John Hennigan, Johnny Mundo, Johnny Impact, Randall, etc.), one name that you can always call this man is tremendously talented. Incredibly agile and jaw droppingly athletic, Morrison continues have awe inspiring matches all over the world at age 40, but some of his best matches happened under the WWE’s radar.
In honor of the former Intercontinental Champion turning the big 4-0, here are four of his best matches under the WWE sun.
4. vs. CM Punk – ECW – ECW Championship – Sept. 4, 2007
I’m always going to feel nostalgic for this one. I still have fond memories of 11-year old me being completely enthralled in the John Morrison vs. CM Punk rivalry during the summer of 2007. ECW as a whole may have been viewed as the butt of a joke early on, but this kid here was young enough, dumb enough, and new enough to wrestling to be sucked into every second of it.
I bought into hating Morrison’s smug attitude; I was too young to know he was giving a bonafide Jim Morrison impression, or know who The Doors even were. And I loved everything about CM Punk from the tattoos to the “don’t drink, don’t smoke” message laced with muay thai kicks. I loved the juxtaposition of two completely different characters going at it.
I just ate it all up. And when it came time for this Do or Die championship match for The Straight Edge Superstar’s final shot at The Guru of Greatness’ title, I was all onboard. After watching my favorite wrestler at the time fail time and time again throughout the summer, I was ready for him to cap off the season with a win and boy, did everything about it deliver. Even now at age 24, it’s easy to get sucked into the spectacle.
