Kevin Owens was the fourth mystery partner on Team Ciampa for WWE NXT TakeOver WarGames. The road that brought KO back to NXT was surprisingly smart booking.

In what was arguably an even bigger shock than Dakota Kai’s heel turn from earlier in the night, Kevin Owens arrived to WWE NXT TakeOver WarGames as the mystery man in Tommaso Ciampa’s corner against The Undisputed Era in the grueling War Games match. We will have to wait and see if KO’s return to the black and gold brand is a permanent one, but the road that led us here is fascinating enough that I want to point it out.

It is not often that WWE commits to smart or simple storytelling (especially if we are talking about angles that happen on Raw or SmackDown), but when they do good, I think it’s important to pat them on the head and hand them a doggy biscuit. Mind you, they don’t do good often (if they did, this doggy biscuit box wouldn’t have last been touched in 2015), but positive reinforcement is important I suppose. Plus, I just think it’s worth explaining why Kevin Owens wanted to help Tommaso Ciampa in the first place. Newsflash: He didn’t.

At least, not directly. KO had his own motives in coming back to NXT and they all had to do with getting even with Undisputed Era.

Let’s wind the clocks back to a few days back on Monday Night Raw. In getting ready for the “war” against Raw and SmackDown heading into Survivor Series, Triple H made an offer to KO to start a new in NXT. Before Owens could answer, chaos broke loose between members of all three brands and, suddenly, Undisputed Era attacked Owens from behind.

Now, naturally, KO would want some revenge and what better way to stick it right back to Adam Cole and co. than by joining his rival’s team and beating the tar out of him inside of a double header of a steel cage!

Next. WWE: We’re adding Braun Strowman vs. Keith Lee to our dream match list. dark

It’s so simple, yet so effective. Wrestling is at its best when characters have simple motivations that allows for easily understood storytelling, which also offers incredible matches. At WarGames, we got all of the above. Kudos, WWE. For once, kudos. Enjoy that doggy biscuit. Keep it up and you’ll find even more biscuits in your mail box.
