AEW: Five stars poised for a breakout year in 2020
3. The Dark Order
That’s right, another tag team on this list. With AEW priding themselves on their star-studded tag division, it’s only normal that we highlight more than duo destined to breakout in year two.
From what we’ve seen in the squared circle, The Dark Order (4-2) have impressed and shown off how much work they’ve put into their craft. This will make for compelling matches against the likes of Private Party, Santana & Ortiz, and the newly signed Butcher & the Blade next year.
We’re not solely getting a pair of stellar in-ring performers who will likely have some incredible matches in 2020. We’re also benefiting from some of the most fascinating vignette work since Razor Ramon stole an apple from a Floridian fruit vendor and hopped in his white Cadillac.
Their #JoinTheDarkOrder shtick not only builds Grayson and Uno’s back story but also allows them to build a certain level of brand notoriety for their soon-to-be faction. Luring under-performing stars by promising them a sense of belonging within the Order.
2. Kris Statlander
The ink on her AEW contract has yet to dry and Kris Statlander (1-2) is already turning heads. You don’t need to be the most seasoned professional wrestling fan to understand that Statlander is one of the rising stars in the world today.
The Create A Pro Wrestling Academy product not only boasts the physicality needed to compete with women’s division powerhouses like Nyla Rose and Awesome Kong. She can also rival the agility of stars like Riho, Hikaru Shida, and Shanna.
Statlander is exactly what the doctor ordered for an ailing AEW women’s division, assuming we’ll get to see her hone her skills on Wednesday Nights.
A high-profile rivalry with the likes of the Nightmare Collective - and an eventual victory on pay-per-view – could skyrocket the ‘galaxy’s greatest alien’ out of the stratosphere in 2020.
1. Luchasaurus
Alright, I’ll just come out and say it: Luchasaurus (2-3) is the most over dinosaur – and human – in All Elite Wrestling. Aside from Cody, the Bucks and Omega, there is a very limited amount of wrestlers who can make the crowd pop like everyone’s favorite Triassic pugilist.
His popularity can be attributed to his association with Jungle Boy and Marko Stunt but is also due to his in-ring work. Luchasaurus had some of the best sequences in 2019 both with Jurassic Express and by himself.
The sheer levels of agility exuded by a man – or dinosaur – of his size make any matches he’s involved in highly watchable. As I mentioned above, the crowd also seems to be behind anything he does whether he jumps on the microphone or kicks the living hell out of three opponents at the same time.
If AEW truly is listening, they’ll make 2020 the year of Luchasaurus with either a tag-title run or by making him the focal point of an eventual mid-card title.
Imagine how much scarier a dinosaur looks when draped in gold.
