WWE: Ranking every Pay Per View in 2019 from worst to first
2. Royal Rumble
I love Royal Rumbles, and 2019’s Royal Rumble Pay Per View was done to perfection. From Nia Jax’s cameo at the end of the Men’s Rumble to Becky Lynch scratching and clawing her way to main eventing WrestleMania, the Rumble had it all.
And, of course, the two best matches were the women’s matches. Before winning the Rumble, Becky Lynch put on a Match of the Year candidate with Asuka that has set up a hyped-up rematch exactly a year later. Of course, Sasha Banks found a way to top that, putting on an even stronger Match of the Year candidate that still stands as Ronda Rousey’s best WWE match.
Even men’s wrestling didn’t suck. Seth Rollins’ Rumble win felt organic and put him on the path to conquering The Beast, who had another Big vs. Smol match with Finn Balor at this show.
For good measure, Buddy Murphy put on a SHOW for the Cruiserweight Division early in the night, too. I can’t wait for Murphy to get his main roster push.
1. WrestleMania
As great as the Rumble was, WrestleMania 35 was an absolute no-brainer for the pick of the best PPV of the year. Becky Lynch stood tall as #Becky2Belts after pinning Ronda Rousey in the main event of the show, as this moment was the culmination of one of the greatest rises to stardom we’ve ever seen in wrestling.
However, the all-time great moment earlier in the show felt even sweeter. Kofi Kingston became the first African-born world champion in WWE, winning the WWE Championship to finish KofiMania with tears of joy. Kingston’s win meant the world to Black wrestling fans, who haven’t seen nearly enough world champions in ANY wrestling company. The match he and Daniel Bryan had was perfect and is easily one of the greatest WrestleMania matches ever. It was the best match of 2019.
Other great moments included John Cena showing up as the Dr. of Thuganomics, Batista having a fairytale retirement match against Triple H after years of asking for one, The Miz falling to his death, Roman Reigns getting a WrestleMania moment after kicking leukemia’s ass, Kurt Angle’s retirement match, and The Usos getting a big WrestleMania win.
In short, WrestleMania 35 had it all, and it had two feel-good wins on an all-time scale of impact. What more could you want?
