The match quality for the women of NXT has always been incredibly high.

Even if you look back to the early days of NXT and the likes of the Four Horsewomen, Paige, Asuka, Kairi Sane, Nikki Cross, etc, the division was constantly putting on fantastic matches on weekly TV and in particularly the Takeover events.

If we take the example of the aforementioned Sasha Banks vs Bayley feud, these two helped revolutionize women’s wrestling with their Takeover matches back in 2015.

This heated and emotional feud combined with giving them the main event spotlight helped them both grow and mature into phenomenal competitors, their contests were often the standout matches of the entire evening.

The matches were magnificently brutal and aggressive, combined with well thought out and clever spots, it was hard not to be invested in the matches from the first bell to the last.

This hard hitting style is even more prevalent in modern day NXT. Shayna Baszler in particular had a dominant 2019. However, that being said, even if she isn’t your favorite wrestler on the roster, there is no denying her ability as the dominant top heel in the division.

Her title reign in 2019 really established her as a force to be reckoned with, she was able to showcase her dominance but also had some of the best wrestlers in the world alongside her. The NXT women’s matches of 2019 were a real throwback to the hard hitting style of the 4 horsewomen days.

Just the 2019 Takeover events alone brought us physical contests such as:

Takeover Phoenix: Shayna Baszler vs Bianca Belair

Takeover New York: Shayna Baszler vs Bianca Belair, Io Shirai, and Kairi Sane

Takeover XXV: Shayna Baszler vs Io Shirai

Takeover Toronto: Io Shirai vs Candice LeRae

Takeover Toronto: Shayna Baszler vs Mia Yim

Takeover WarGames: Team Ripley (Rhea Ripley, Candice LeRae, Tegan Nox, and Dakota Kai) vs Team Baszler (Shayna Baszler, Bianca Belair, Io Shirai, and Kay Lee Ray)

For me, personally, these were up there as some of the best women’s matches of 2019. I loved the hard hitting style and so did the fans in attendance given the mostly positive crowd reaction.

Given the match quality that the women of NXT are currently showcasing and the incredible roster depth. It’s clear to me that a much needed and well deserved Takeover main event is surely on the cards sooner rather than later.
