For everyone who was looking forward to seeing Asuka vs. Shayna Baszler on WWE Raw tonight, prepare to be disappointed. Here’s why it’s been cancelled:

Mere hours before WWE was set to air a dream match of sorts, we are now learning that Asuka has been replaced in the match and now, Shayna Baszler will be taking on Kairi Sane, someone who Baszler has tussled with numerous times against during their NXT days, most notably in 2018’s first (and so far, only) all women’s Pay-Per-View event, Evolution.

The reason that WWE have offered is because Asuka is currently suffering from a sprained wrist, but according to the always reliable Tom Colohue of Sportskeeda fame, there is slightly more to the story than that.

According to Colohue, another reason why is because of the negative reaction to the original announcement of Asuka vs. Shayna Baszler. Which suggests that Asuka’s sprained wrist may be more of a kayfabe explanation than a real life concern.

When he refers to the match’s “negative reaction,” he is referring to the backlash that was received on social media from fans thinking that Shayna Baszler vs. Asuka was big enough to justify a PPV match rather than a televised, free contest that was put together in just a few days.

The two wrestlers had their first onscreen staredown during last week’s Raw during the show’s contract signing between all six women competing in this Sunday’s Elimination Chamber. Soon after, WWE announced on Twitter that they would square off for the first time ever. And then, that’s when a large subsection of the internet lost their marbles in the worst way.

Whether Asuka’s injury is legit or not, Sane vs. Baszler facing each other for the first time in nearly a year is still a fun prospect to look forward to in itself. Hopefully, next time WWE announce Baszler vs. Asuka, it’d be on terms that we can all agree on.
