AEW Booms and Duds: Jake the Snake has still got it on the mic
Boom: giving a mic to wrestlers who can cut a promo
One of the biggest complaints when Dynamite first started airing was the absence of Moxley giving promos, particularly about who he is, what his goals are, and why he came to AEW. During the build to his match with Jericho at Revolution and previous matches with Santana and Ortiz, Moxley did answer those questions.
Now that he’s champion, he’s shown what we always knew in WWE (even when given atrocious scripts): this man is a promo machine.
He worked the crowd into a frenzy almost immediately (helped by his entering through the crowd). He gave an impassioned promo about how professional wrestling is his life, how AEW brough wrestling back, and how the World Championship belongs to the “AEW Family” (hoping this isn’t another “WWE Universe”).
Jericho is the perfect foil. “Le Champion” is one of the best ever in turning face reactions into heel heat with a quickness. Even when heeling it up against an opponent (like Jungle Boy, for example), Jericho seemingly always puts them over in one way or another.
He is also great at providing stakes for a match that not only seem realistic, but hooks the viewers. Sure, if you know about Jericho’s non-wrestling life, you probably know he will take a leave of absence some time in the future, but by teasing it tonight, Jericho planted the seed for a long-term story (something AEW does very well).
On another note, both PAC and Britt Baker, D.M.D. (did you know she’s a dentist?) also did well on the mic (or headset). PAC, having beaten Taylor after a grueling week of matches, introduced us to the newest trio in AEW: The Death Triangle (or Trianglo de la Muerte).
Baker continues to grow into a bonafide heel, and seems to have a real chemistry when working with Tony Schiavone, at least in the sense that he provides a good face interviewer/announcer to counter her heel mannerisms. I mean, just look at them!
