WWE Raw Takeaways: This may be Asuka’s Backlash opponent
The new twist on the brand split
Before WWE Raw aired, POST Wrestling’s John Pollock reported that television networks asked the promotion to do some crossing over between brands to boost the ratings.
The result is a new twist on the “Wild Card Rule” that seems to be far more effective, much less confusing, and more likely to result in specifically-chosen matches and segments that increase interest in the product. It could all backfire – this is WWE we’re talking about, it isn’t easy – but the early indications are encouraging.
On Friday, NXT Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair will appear on Friday Night SmackDown. And next week on Raw, WWE Champion Drew McIntyre will have a match with the homicidal King Corbin, who addressed his murderous actions at Money in the Bank in the most absurd way.
Corbin is going to get destroyed by McIntyre, who is the perfect person to humble the false royal. It’s a small way to introduce the new brand crossover to Monday nights, but it’s right to take baby steps.
If WWE play their cards right, this could be a wise way to bump up interest during the crowdless era. It won’t be easy, but I have faith that this could be an excellent ploy for storylines, even if there probably won’t be a major jump in ratings.
