WWE NXT: Dethroning Charlotte Flair is Rhea Ripley’s best shot at redemption
By Kyla Hessler
Rhea Ripley must be the woman that gets to dethrone The Queen, Charlotte Flair, for the WWE NXT Women’s Title, and it’s essential that this takes place soon, for the sake of NXT as a whole.
Charlotte Flair has reigned as WWE NXT Women’s Champion since WrestleMania 36, when she gained the title by defeating the former champion, Rhea Ripley via submission. It has been an entire month later and Charlotte is still the reigning NXT Women’s champion.
Recently, Io Shirai faced Charlotte Flair for her title after winning a ladder match to gain the opportunity, and Charlotte ended up getting herself disqualified from the match. Since it was a match for the WWE NXT Women’s Championship, the stipulation of champion’s advantage allowed Flair to retain the title.
Although it looked as though Charlotte was going to use Io to send a message to the entire WWE NXT women’s roster, she was unable to send it thanks to the interference of Ripley.
Rhea made her first appearance since WrestleMania on NXT when she spoiled Charlotte’s parade by stopping the Queen from inflicting some serious damage to Shirai, after Flair got herself disqualified.
Consequently, Rhea’s actions certainly were able to gain the attention of the current NXT Women’s Champion; however it inadvertently gained the attention of Io Shirai. Shirai made it very clear that she was not happy with the interference from Ripley.
Ripley stepping out to prevent Charlotte from seriously injuring Io shows that she has confidence that she will be able to beat Flair, even if it means bulldozing her way through the Genius of the Sky to do so. Rhea made this very clear on NXT this past Wednesday, and now there is a match scheduled between Shirai and Ripley for next week.
Ripley Ripley needs to beat Shirai, in order to get another one on one shot against The Queen for the gold. This will provide Rhea with the opportunity to bounce back from her WrestleMania loss to Flair.
Once Ripley snatches a title match opportunity, she will then move on to defeat The Queen for the championship while she simultaneously reminds Flair about whose house NXT really is.
Witnessing the current NXT Women’s Champion effortlessly lay waste to such a dynamic superstar as Shirai does make it seem like WWE is trying to work an angle where Charlotte Flair beats the entire NXT women’s roster.
This allows Charlotte to add to her legacy, probably in attempts to have The Queen match or outshine her illustrious father, the 16-time champion, Ric Flair.
Ripley is trying to be the woman who puts an end to The Queen’s reign on NXT. She should be the one to knock off Charlotte because she is deserving.
As the first ever WWE NXT UK Women’s Champion, a former WWE NXT Women’s Champion, being a part of the 2019 NXT War Games winning team, and being a part of the 2019 Survivor Series winning team, it is evident that Ripley strives to be the best and picks herself back up if she gets knocked down.
The talent that Ripley portrays and her work ethic alone is deserving of sitting on the throne that comes with being WWE NXT Women’s Champion. The fact that Ripley has been able to accomplish her goals on her own, without any help from a Hall of Famer daddy is also a plus.
Undoubtedly, Charlotte had yet another history making WrestleMania moment when she defeated Ripley for the NXT Women’s championship. This was the first time that the title was defended at WrestleMania after all.
While Flair probably became champion in the hopes of bringing stature to the fairly new brand that is NXT by having The Queen on the brand, it seems like the title change could be catastrophic for the brand’s female wrestlers.
Apparently, Charlotte Flair is supposed to run through the entire NXT women’s division, which would negatively impact the division if this were to take place.
It would make the women on the roster seem weak if Flair were able to effortlessly beat each one, and if 50 percent of a show is deemed weak, the quality of the brand is brought down tremendously.
To ensure that the women’s division and NXT as a whole doesn’t suffer, The Nightmare needs to creep in and awaken The Queen from her all to real dream.
Altogether, Rhea may have fumbled the ball at WrestleMania, but she now has the chance to pick it back up to gain her rightful place in NXT.
Ripley needs to beat Flair to not only redeem herself, but to show the WWE Universe the impressive wrestling ability that she possesses, and to save the NXT women’s roster (and NXT as a whole).
