WWE SummerSlam 2020: 5 possible matches for AJ Styles

Who could AJ Styles face in an Intercontinental Title match at WWE SummerSlam 2020?

Barring an unexpected twist before the Pay Per View, AJ Styles will head into WWE SummerSlam 2020 as the Intercontinental Champion. He’s put together a couple of great matches with Drew Gulak and Gran Metalik, but he could be ready to move on from the title with a babyface giving SmackDown’s mid-card men’s belt a much-needed prestige boost.

Here are five possible matches for the Phenomenal One at the Biggest Party of the Summer.

Big E

I’m going to start with Big E, because there’s a caveat here. The ONLY way I want to see Big E in a SummerSlam match with Styles is if E wins and THEN goes on to win the Universal or WWE Championship after using the IC Title as a springboard to showing he should be world champion.

For the rest of us at home, we know E should be a world champion again, just like he was early in his career at NXT. But maybe Vince McMahon needs convincing. So E can win the IC Title, make it the most must-see it’s been since The Miz held it in late 2016, and then go on to something bigger.

Jeff Hardy

The less I say about the storyline with Sheamus, the better. As long as Jeff Hardy is still under contract in WWE, the company needs to be using him. He remains popular and can still be involved in an Intercontinental Title program. Styles and Hardy have plenty of familiarity and could have a good match at WWE SummerSlam 2020.

Drew Gulak

It would be special to see Drew Gulak finally win a title on the “main roster” after being a Cruiserweight Champion on 205 Live. Gulak is one of the best wrestlers on SmackDown and, if we’re being honest, a better promo than Styles.

In kayfabe, Styles has made Gulak’s life miserable recently, so it would be awesome to see Gulak give him some payback (well, even before Payback actually happens) after another fantastic technical match between the two of them.

A Ladder Match

Just throw everyone in there. King Corbin, Sheamus, Chad Gable (no, I am NOT calling him by his other name…I refuse!), Jeff Hardy, and Drew Gulak with AJ Styles. There’s nothing quite like an Intercontinental Title ladder match, and this one would be a show-stealer. Everyone seems intertwined at this point so just go ahead, throw them all in there, and embrace the absolute chaos of a mid-card title ladder match.

Jeff Hardy vs. AJ Styles vs. Chad Gable

I love Triple Threat matches, and this Triple Threat would be an awesome WWE SummerSlam 2020. Why isn’t King Corbin in there? I think he’ll have a match with someone else, while Gable could get some shine in the ring with two legends. Gable could be the one to carry a lot of the match, moonsaulting all over the place.

In the end, Jeff Hardy would have a feel-good IC Title victory, pinning Styles. And then we’d get a Hardy feud with Gable, with Gable going over. As for Styles, I’m sure WWE will have something big planned for him. They always seem to.
