WWE SmackDown took place on September 4, 2020, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on FOX.

Are you ready? Are you ready for a good time? The blue brand was stacked tonight with PPV-worthy matches and suspenseful segments. The SmackDown after WWE PayBack 2020 seemed promising. The review for this episode was as follows:

On tonight’s episode of WWE SmackDown, there were two scheduled matches: (1) Big E vs. Matt Riddle vs. King Corbin vs. Sheamus in a fatal four-way match to determine the next number one contender for the Universal Championship, and (2) Shayna Baszler and Nia Jax (c) vs. Bayley and Sasha Banks for the Women’s Tag Team Championships.

With WWE Clash of Champions 2020 only three weeks away, there were quite a few rivalries to build towards. With that being said, it’s now time to bleed blue and recap what happened on this week’s episode of WWE SmackDown, starting with Universal Champion Roman Reigns’ promo.

Universal Champion Roman Reigns Promo (w/Paul Heyman)

Result: Roman Reigns and Paul Heyman addressed SmackDown’s main event scene.

Grade: A-, Roman Reigns and Paul Heyman look like a million bucks. If this is what the face of SmackDown Live will look like for the next few months, it will be a fun ride on the blue brand.

Roman Reigns and Paul Heyman asserted that whoever wins the fatal four-way match amongst Big E, Matt Riddle, King Corbin, and Sheamus later tonight will unquestionably fall to Reigns at WWE Clash of Champions 2020. They solidified Reigns’ victory over Wyatt and Strowman at WWE PayBack 2020 with this promo and look forward to running this yard for a long time.

Heavy Machinery vs. The Miz and John Morrison [Tag Match]

Result: Heavy Machinery (via pinfall)

Grade: C+, This was a typical tag match where Miz and Morrison took a loss. However, the more interesting event was after the match when Morrison stole the MITB Briefcase.

The Miz and Morrison took full control over Otis for the majority of the match until Otis got fired up. Morrison stopped Tucker from tagging in by delivering a Spinning Neckbreaker to Tucker outside the ring. However, that did not stop Otis because he delivered two over-the-head suplexes to Miz and Morrison and a Caterpillar to The Miz for the pinfall and the victory.

After the match, Morrison stole Otis’ MITB Contract. The show shifted to Big E celebrating Xavier Woods’ birthday. He was looking forward to giving Woods his birthday cake, but Sheamus surprise attacked Big E in the parking lot and delivered a White Noise to Big E through the windshield of a car. That’s going to hurt in the morning.

Shayna Baszler and Nia Jax (c) vs. Bayley and Sasha Banks [Women’s Tag Team Championships]

Result: Shayna Baszler and Nia Jax (via pinfall)

Grade: A+, This match was excellent, but the real highlight was Bayley’s vicious betrayal of Sasha Banks after the match. That was awesome! Double Cross of the Year!

Bayley and Sasha Banks took full control over Nia Jax. Banks got the most offense on Jax with double knees and a Meteora for the nearfall. Banks attempted a Sleeper Hold, but Baszler tagged Jax and Bayley tagged Banks. Banks and Bayley take Jax out with Bayley’s Stunner on the ropes and Banks’ Powerbomb.

Baszler attempted to attack Bayley from behind with the Kirifuda Clutch but Bayley countered with a Back Suplex. Bayley tagged in Banks for Banks to deliver a Backstabber to Baszler. Banks tagged in Bayley to deliver an Elbow Drop for the nearfall. Banks attempted a Double Knees at Baszler but Baszler moved out of the way, causing Banks to hurt her knee on the steel post.

Baszler capitalized on this opportunity by focusing on the injured knee. Bayley saved Banks by delivering a Bayley to Belly to Baszler. Banks covered Baszler for the nearfall but immediately went for the Banks Statement. Jax made the save and tagged in to deliver a Samoan Drop to Banks from the top rope, but Bayley made the save.

Bayley and Banks delivered a Back Suplex to Baszler. However, that gave Jax ample time to deliver a Flying Crossbody from the top rope to both Bayley and Banks for the pinfall and retention. This match stole the show. It was good storytelling to see Baszler make both Bayley and Banks tap out at WWE PayBack 2020 and book Jax to pin both Bayley and Banks tonight.

After the match, Bayley viciously double-crossed Sasha Banks. Bayley wrapped a steel chair around Banks’ neck and dived from the top rope with a knee to Banks’ neck. This could take Banks out of commission for a very long time. Bayley stole the show with this betrayal. It’s impossible not to feel sympathy for the newborn babyface, Sasha Banks.

Matt Riddle vs. Sheamus vs. King Corbin vs. Jey Uso [Fatal Four Way Match: Universal Championship #1C Match]

Result: Jey Uso (via pinfall)

Grade: A-, This was the biggest swerve of the year. Jey Uso actually became the number one contender for the Universal Championship. What a SLOBBER KNOCKER!

Before this match, Sami Zayn had a brief segment with Jeff Hardy and AJ Styles, in which they argued about who the true Intercontinental Champion is. Jeff Hardy delivered a Twist of Fate to AJ Styles and Sami Zayn delivered a Helluva Kick to Jeff Hardy to close the segment as he walked away with his version of the Intercontinental Championship.

A FireFly Funhouse segment popped up to show that Bray Wyatt will have a new friend in the FireFly Funhouse on next week’s SmackDown. Bliss and Cross were seen backstage chatting while Ramblin’ Rabbit was spying in the background. Bliss strangely hugged Cross during their conversation, despite their blown up altercation on last week’s SmackDown.

As for this match, it started off in a brawl. Sheamus took control for most of this match but Riddle neutralized Sheamus with his fiery kicks, Broton Bomb, and German Suplex. Sheamus rallied back with Clover Leaf Submission Hold. Jey Uso stopped the submission hold with a Superkick. Corbin rolled up Uso for the nearfall but Uso rallied back with Superkicks to all three men.

Riddle and Sheamus tossed Corbin over the barricade and Uso delivered a Flying Crossbody to Riddle and Sheamus. Corbin got up quickly. Corbin attempted the End of Days on Riddle but Riddle wiggled out of it. Sheamus delivered a Brigue Kick to Corbin. Riddle delivered a Bro to Sleep tp Sheamus and a Floating Bro to Corbin but Uso delivered an Uso Splash to Riddle for the victory.

Next. Should Sasha Banks and Bayley face off at WrestleMania 37?. dark
