All Elite Wrestling: Top Five Wrestlers of 2020
#1. Kenny Omega
To be honest, before Omega captured the AEW World Championship on last week’s Dynamite he would have been further down this list, but adding the AEW World Title is a nice boost to any resume.
Even though Kenny Omega’s main focus in 2020 was helping to build the AEW tag team division, (he didn’t enter the AEW World Title Picture until November) he still put together the resume to be named AEW’s top performer for 2020.
Omega was one half of the AEW Tag Team Champions with his partner, Hangman Adam Page, for almost eight months. Omega and Page won the title from SCU to become the second-ever AEW Tag Team Champions. The duo was also a part of the AEW match of the year when they defended their titles against The Young Bucks at Revolution. Omega and Page would also have top ten match of the year candidates with the Lucha Brothers and FTR as well as participate in the widely acclaimed Stadium Stampede Match at Double or Nothing. Omega brought the cinematic treasure to an end while delivering a one-winged angel to Sammy Guevara from the stadium seats down onto a platform on the field.
After dropping the tag titles to FTR, Omega voiced his desire to continue on as a singles star, against his partner’s wishes. This was no surprise as Omega and Page were often on different pages throughout their reign as tag team champions. The former partners would go on to meet during the finals of the AEW World Title Eliminator Tournament at Full Gear with the winner getting a future title shot. Omega would win this match setting up his title shot vs. Jon Moxley on the Winter is Coming episode of Dynamite. Omega would of course go on to win the AEW Championship Title by defeating Moxley with the help of Don Callis leaving us all wondering about the future relationship between All Elite Wrestling and Impact Wrestling.
It really speaks to the brilliance of Kenny Omega that he can use almost an entire calendar year to help build the tag team division but at the same team be setting up future storylines we care about with Adam Page and Don Callis and still win the most coveted title in the promotion. 2021 promises to be a year full of classics as Kenny Omega focuses on singles wrestling and defending his newly won AEW Championship Title.
