NXT Takeover has become the most popular and consistent Pay-Per-View Event in WWE. Since 2014, NXT has hosted 35 different Takeover events. The first four shows would occur at Full Sail University, but the NXT fan base would grow and decide to take the event on the road. Takeover is an event used as a blow-off for some of the biggest rivalries on the brand.

The Takeover Pay-Per-view format is similar to how WWE use to number all of the In Your House Events, which is also now a part of Takeover. NXT draws more eyes to the product when they have Takeover events because fans know they’re getting something special. In this article, I will be discussing the top five Takeover matches.

5. The Revival vs. American Alpha at Takeover Dallas, April 2016

Before AEW became the company with the best tag-team division, NXT was building up its tag-team division with some of the best wrestlers in the world. This match was a throwback match to the golden era of tag-team wrestling because it was the first match of this Takeover card. The match was fast-paced and told a fantastic story in the ring. The team of Jason Jordan and Chad Gable was the perfect babyface team to push in the tag-team division because they could do it all in the ring. It’s a shame that neither team is in WWE today, but this match will forever be linked to the show.

4. Andrade ‘Cien’ Almas vs. Johnny Gargano at TakeOver Philadelphia, January 2018

In the world of professional wrestling, every once in a while, you will get two wrestlers who were made to be in the ring with each other, and this match was one of the special moments. The two men in this match went out to the ring to prove who was the best wrestler in NXT with the most important championship on the line. This match was never slow from the start to the end of the match; both men put theirs all into what would be an exceptional five-star match.

3. Tyler Bate vs. Pete Dunne at TakeOver: Chicago

This was a classic Takeover match that showed why British Wrestling is important to the world of professional wrestling. This match took place before the WWE created the NXT UK brand. Tyler Bate and Pete Dunne met in the finals to crown the first-ever NXT UK champion in a match that saw Tyler Bate win. Fast forward a couple of months later, and fans were given another chance to see these two great wrestlers wrestle in another match. Everyone did an amazing job of making sure that this match was treated as a big deal because WWE brought in Legendary commentator Jim Ross to call the match. Both Dunne and Bate would construct a classic match that their peers and elders would be proud of.

2. Women’s Championship Match: Sasha Banks (c) vs. Bayley at TakeOver: Brooklyn, Barclays Center

The Women’s revolution seeds were planted in this match because this was one of the greatest matches in the history of the WWE. You can argue all you want, but these two women put on the greatest women’s match in the history in all of WWE. The fans at the event was able to see two future Hall of Famers proving that women’s wrestling has a place in professional wrestling.

1. Adam Cole vs. Johnny Gargano TakeOver: New York (5th April 2019)

This was the first-ever match to break the five-star rating with a 5.5 rating, this match was supposed to be the finale of the Ciampa and Gargano feud, but the injury would stop that from happening. Cole and Gargano would put together a classic wrestling match that told the story of two wrestlers trying to prove who the best wrestler on the show The end of the match would see the moment when Gargano would become the top babyface on the brand.
