WWE SmackDown Results August 6: Finn Balor wins in main event

WWE SmackDown is presented this week live from the Amalie Arena in Tampa Bay, Florida. Already announced is Finn Balor vs. Baron Corbin and Dominik Mysterio vs. Jey Uso. WWE SmackDown Women’s Champion, Bianca Belair, will also respond to the attack from Sasha Banks last week.

WWE SmackDown Results 08/06/2021

SmackDown kicks off with a live shot of a jam-packed Amalie Arena in Tampa. Sasha Banks’ music hits and ‘The Boss’ makes her way to the ring. Sasha receives a mixed reaction. Mainly cheers. Banks says she’s back for the spotlight that she deserves and created. She then takes us to footage from last week when she made her return and teamed with Belair before turning on her. Sasha continues to explain why she turned on Bianca saying that she dissed her and Bianca is nothing without her. Sasha says she’s back to make Bianca pay.

Belair’s music hits and she comes out to the stage. Belair says Sasha doesn’t want her to shine. Belair then rolls into the ring as Sasha immediately exits. Sasha then gets on the announce table. Sasha says she is legendary and can do what she wants. Belair says if Sasha wants ‘this’ then it is on. Zelina Vega then makes her way out. Vega says this isn’t happening right now. Belair warns her not to get in the ring. Zelina reminds Bianca that she accepted her challenge last week. Bianca says she will see Sasha at SummerSlam and says she will fight Zelina Vega tonight for the SmackDown Women’s Championship.

Backstage, Rey questions why Dominik challenged Jey Uso tonight. Rey says they have to be more strategic and they can’t risk a loss before their SmackDown Tag Titles match at SummerSlam. Dominik says he won’t let Rey down. Jey Uso vs. Dominik Mysterio is up next.

Dominik Mysterio w/ Rey Mysterio vs. Jey Uso w/ Jimmy Uso

Dominik Mysterio wearing an attire similar coloring to that of Nikki A.S.H. starts the match at a fast pace. He delivers a wonderful dropkick on Uso. Jey Uso then takes control and shows his experience. Outside of the ring, Dominik delivers a sunset flip from the apron into the barricade as we go to the commercial. We return from the commercial with Jey Uso in control of the match after help from Jimmy. Later in the match, Mysterio delivers a 619 before he is distracted by Rey taking out Jimmy on the outside. Jey then hits the superkick and the splash to pick up the win.

Backstage, Edge is shown walking backstage and is quickly interviewed. Edge says when Rollins arrives tonight, he can meet him in the ring. King Nakamura makes his way to the ring as we go to commercial. When we return, it is revealed John Cena will be on SmackDown next week after hyping up the release of his new film.

Intercontinental Champion Apollo Crews w/ Commander Azeez vs. King Nakamura w/ Boogs in a non-title match

It is made clear that if Nakamura wins, it will put him in contention for a shot at the Intercontinental Championship. Nakamura was covering Apollo when Azeez pulled him out of the ring and the referee rang the bell disqualifying the champion.

Winner: King Nakamura via DQ

Kayla Braxton is backstage outside Roman Reigns’ locker room awaiting word from the Universal Champion after what happened last week. A recap video is shown of the contract signing from last Friday. Kayla is still waiting as Paul Heyman emerges and asks Kayla what she wants. Heyman calls the Buccaneers the Tampa Bay Schmuckaneers which receives a negative response. Heyman says the contract signed last week by John Cena is a joke and meritless. Heyman says Cena blatantly does not deserve it. Heyman reveals that Reigns has nothing to say and Heyman says he’s not in the mood. Heyman turns around and Big E is standing there holding his Money in the Bank briefcase whilst laughing. Heyman then retreats back into Reigns’ locker room.

One-half of the WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions, Tamina is in the ring as we return from commercial. Shotzi and Nox make their entrance. Nox now faces Tamina. It is also revealed that Bianca vs. Vega tonight will now be a Women’s Championship Contenders match. Was that just changed mid-way through the show?

Tamina vs. Nox w/ Shotzi

Shotzi sits in her tank at ringside as Nox uses her aggression to bring the fight to Tamina. Shotzi fired a missile from the tank, which distracted Tamina and Nox manages to pick up the win reversing a Samoan Drop. It’s over just like that.

Backstage, Adam Pearce and Sonya Deville explain that they can’t give Zelina a SmackDown Women’s Title match as they didn’t have enough time to promote. Zelina says she wants her title match. Sonya says she makes the decisions around here. Pearce tells Zelina to earn her shot. Sonya says if she wins tonight she will face the winner of Belair and Sasha at SummerSlam. Why couldn’t they have just written that in from the start? Odd.

Edge makes his way to the ring to an always thunderous reception. Edge speaks next. He’s not attacked by Rollins this week as he makes his way down to the ring. Edge thanks Tampa for the amazing reception. Edge says Seth Rollins isn’t here tonight. Edge says he’d end up in jail if Rollins was here tonight. Edge reminds us that Rollins cost him the Universal Championship at Money in the Bank. Edge says looking at Rollins is like looking in the mirror of his past. Edge says it has got to end. Edge says if Rollins was here tonight it would end. Rollins appears on the titantron via satellite.

Another fantastic drip from Seth Rollins, by the way. Rollins says you always have to have a plan B. Edge says he has a plan B and suggests him vs. Rollins at SummerSlam. Rollins says he calls the shots around here. Rollins says let him think about it because he has a lot going on. Rollins says whilst he’s mulling it over, Edge should think about it. Rollins questions Edge’s decision to challenge him and talks about stomping his fused neck. Rollins brings Edge’s family into it and Edge gets mad. Edge says Rollins is infatuated with him. Edge reminds Rollins he eliminated him twice from the Royal Rumble match. Edge says that Rollins is bothered that he didn’t finish the job in 2014. Edge calls Rollins Edge-lite and Rollins gets mad. Rollins says he is better than Edge in every single way. Rollins looks into the camera and accepts Edge’s SummerSlam challenge. Edge is delighted.

Backstage, Kayla Braxton is with Finn Balor. Balor is infuriated by what transpired last week during the contract signing. Balor says Corbin is going to learn the hard way tonight. Balor says once he’s done with Corbin, he’s coming for John Cena. The Street Profits are in action next as they face Robert Roode and Dolph Ziggler.

The Street Profits vs. Robert Roode and Dolph Ziggler

They show a video from January when Roode and Ziggler defeated The Street Profits for the SmackDown Tag Team titles to set the story for this match. Roode’s experience shows early on in the match, before tagging in Ziggler. Dawkins and Ziggler both get near falls on each other. Later in the match, Montez Ford hits a perfect splash on Ziggler and picks up the win.

Up next, it is the SmackDown Women’s Championship Contenders Match between Bianca Belair and Zelina Vega.

WWE SmackDown’s Women’s Champion Bianca Belair vs. Zelina Vega in a Championship Contenders Match

Early in the match, Zelina Vega managed to get a roll-up nearly clinching a victory. Both women trade blows and share the control of the match. Bianca uses her incredible strength to try and get an advantage. Sasha Banks’ music hits distracting Bianca Belair. Sasha is laughing on the entrance ramp. Vega almost picks up the win again following the distraction but Bianca kicks out. Later in the match, Bianca Belair shows her quality and picks up the win. All credit to Zelina who put in a great performance. We’re still wondering where Liv Morgan is though and what has happened to her following her recent rise a few weeks ago.

Backstage, Roman Reigns reveals he is interested in tonight’s main event. Finn Balor makes his way out for the main event. He faces Baron Corbin next.

Finn Balor vs. Baron Corbin

The match starts and Corbin immediately demands a microphone. Corbin says he’s desperate. Balor doesn’t want to help him and accepts his apology and the match begins. Balor takes the aggression to Corbin. This ‘down on his luck’ Corbin gimmick is one of the best parts of SmackDown. Corbin always seems to do well with the characters he’s given. Always gets a reaction. Balor hits his finisher from the top rope and finishes off Corbin fairly quickly.

Winner: Finn Balor

Balor grabs a microphone and says he wants to face Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship. Balor says if he has to go through John Cena to do it, then he’s willing to do it. Love the new aggression from Balor. Here comes the Universal Champion, Roman Reigns with Paul Heyman. Reigns speaks next as SmackDown goes to commercial. Reigns understands why he’s upset and running his mouth about John Cena. Reigns says he tried to help him and give him an opportunity. Reigns tells Balor to keep the ‘Head of the Table’s’ name out of his mouth when talking on his show.

As Reigns leaves the ring, Finn knocks him out of the ring. Reigns looks angry as he turns around. The fans start chanting Cena. The Uso’s then appear and attack Finn Balor. Balor fights back and takes out The Uso’s. Balor points at Reigns and says it is his turn. Reigns takes off his jacket and marches to the ring. Reigns and Balor collide and Balor takes him down, but The Uso’s manage to get back involved. The Uso’s set Balor up for the Superman Punch which Reigns delivers, and then an Uso Splash. The Bloodline have made Balor fall in line. Reigns holds up his Universal Championship as the show ends.
