The top 5 wrestlers with promo abilities in recent WWE history
By Amit Shukla
Wrestling is no longer an act where you step between the ropes and defeat or get defeated by your opponent. It used to be this way back when Vince McMahon Sr was in charge, but since Jr. took over, things have changed drastically. WWE’s Chairman of the Board altered the policies that governed the wrestling business, or should we say territorial wrestling business.
He created superstars that would not only wrestle but also talk on the microphone. Hulk Hogan, Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock are examples of superstars that can cut promos and wrestle. As time passed, a new generation took over these superstars, and they have ruled the business ever since. We are picking superstars from the last five years who showed us that they have the gift of gab.
Drew McIntyre
Drew McIntyre‘s first run is not something he or you would want to remember. The Scottish Psychopath is now talented on the roster and has shown immense improvement. His physique, words, and actions between and beyond the ropes speak volumes about him.
Drew was in the WWE Championship contention until Money in the Bank 2021. He didn’t win the match or the title at the show, but his recent storylines are nothing short of brilliant. If his WrestleMania match last year and this year’s buildup to the Grandest Stage of them All is any indication, one cannot deny his mic skills.
Daniel Bryan
Daniel Bryan worked with the WWE until a few months ago. His final match came on the 30th of April SmackDown episode, where he fought for the Universal Championship. The fight happened with the condition that if he lost, he would leave the blue brand. No one expected it to be his last match as his contract expired the same day. The wrestling experts revealed it later, and he made his return to wrestling at AEW’s All Out this month.
Daniel Bryan is not just the best performer between the ropes but also the microphone. He knows the art of putting stress on the correct word to leave an impact. His retirement speech, return speech and various other moments confirm that he is a gifted performer. Shockingly, such a fan favorite was left out or let go by the WWE to their nemesis.
Roman Reigns
Whether you like the head of the table or not, you cannot deny that he has grown leaps and bounds over the last five years. Roman Reigns went from being the most booed superstar to one whose on-screen work has made him the centerpiece of every big storyline on SmackDown. The Tribal Chief character has worked in his favor, and his turn as a heel since last year’s SummerSlam has only boosted things.
With a year in the record books, Roman Reigns continues to move up the ladder and has helped deserving superstars get the opportunity. Cesaro is one superstar that comes instantly to mind as The Swiss Cyborg remained an afterthought until Daniel Bryan pushed for him. He got the storyline to be in the Universal Championship storyline and proved his mettle.
The Miz
The most must-see superstar is also the best on the microphone except for some other big names. His journey didn’t start well, as he goofed up during the diva search program. It turned his life around as he worked on his craft, and now he is ‘Awesome.’ He worked so well that he was used to helping get other superstars over.
The B-Team, Damien Sandow, Alex Riley, and others found success by aligning or going against him. 2006 to 2021 is a long journey, and one half of the It Couple has shown that perseverance, dedication, and the approach to perform well during obscurity can take you to better situations. Speaking of never give up, let’s look at the last entry on this list.
John Cena
Arguably the biggest name in the last two decades, John Cena is the best on the mic. If you think that how could he be on this list, then let’s head back to the Roman Reigns and John Cena storyline heading into Payback 2017. Roman Reigns wanted to be the next big thing, but maybe he lacked what was needed to pull him up from his cocoon.
John Cena returns, and the two had some fiery words before the duo’s segment was considered the best in recent times. The 16-time world champion made fun of Roman Reigns for forgetting his lines during the promo. He made the war of words exceptional, and no one can deny it.
