All Elite Wrestling update on video game production
The AEW video game is a milestone for the company as a brand. AEW has not been shy about the potential of their upcoming video game. Since January, we have been hearing tidbits of what this game will include.
When the AEW video game originally launched as a demo in November 2020, Kenny Omega and Chris Jericho were duking it out in the ring, The character models looked cartoonish and disproportionate. The demo showed off a few wrestling moves, a few reversals, and Hikaru Shida’s model.
Since then we have seen a graphical overhaul that is more realistic. On the other hand, we don’t know much about modes, gameplay, and career.
Here’s what we knew about the AEW video game since January 2021:
- Yukes and the No Mercy director Hideyuki “Geta” Iwashita will be producing it
- The game will feature intergender matches
- Yukes is building a new wrestling engine from the ground up
- There will be no General Manager mode as it is a separate app you can download for iOS and Android
- Blood will be added into the wrestling matches
- The game will feel less like a sim and more like an arcade game
Here are some of the most recent updates that have come up for the AEW video game
Owen Hart will be a playable character
Owen Hart has not been a playable character in a video game since 2004’s Legends of Wrestling. The last WWE game he was featured in was WWF Attitude. So far alpha footage has confirmed Jungle Boy and Darby Allin. You can also set your watch that Bryan Danielson and CM Punk will be announced for the game.
We can confirm with great certainty that Chris Jericho, Kenny Omega, and Hikaru Shida, The Young Bucks, and Cody Rhodes will be in the game. There will definitely be a much fuller roster as more updates will come out. How deep will the AEW video game universe go? Will it include some of the up-and-comers from AEW Dark? Are Dean Malenko, Sting, Tully Blanchard, Arn Anderson, and DDP playable characters? We will see.
The release date will be next year (2022)
The AEW video game has been confirmed for a console release in 2022. That is not very descriptive, but that is all sources have gotten from Kenny Omega. He states:
"“So far, so good, but it’s going to be a process, and I’ve said this before, but it’s not something that we’re rushing. We do plan to hopefully get it out by next year [2022]. But (we) can’t commit to a solid date just in case.”"
The Darby Allin and Jungle Boy Match
The one-minute video featuring Darby Allin and Jungle Boy wrestling has revealed a lot about the gameplay for the AEW video game. In the clip, Jungle Boy is able to drag Darby Allin to the post and somersault off the ropes, and hit an arm drag. In another part of the video, Jungle Boy jumps off the ropes and hits a tornado DDT on Darby. Jungle Boy then Irish whips Darby into the ropes, hits a snapmare takeover, and a cranium kick. Finally, Jungle Boy hits a rolling Snare Trap submission as Darby taps out.
The gameplay is still in development, but the gameplay looks very smooth.
The year 2022 will be a gold mine for wrestling games. Hopefully, AEW is a gem.
