Why Booking A WrestleMania 38 Win For Drew McIntyre Is Common Sense

Since arriving at the SmackDown brand, Drew McIntyre has yet to be involved in a WWE world title opportunity. However, The Scottish Psychopath is now scheduled to face Happy Corbin (with Madcap Moss) during night one of this year’s WrestleMania 38 event.

Previously dealing with a lingering neck issue, McIntyre had appeared to be written off the television in January, but after a few weeks, he would make his return at the Royal Rumble, earning his spot at wrestling’s largest show of the year.

It shouldn’t be much of a surprise if WWE books McIntyre to get over Corbin at WrestleMania, as it would be a perfect blow-off match for a long-term feud and one that’s been often underwhelming. Nonetheless, Drew remains as one of the company’s premier talents, and a win over Corbin should only propel him to new levels on SmackDown.

With the main event for WrestleMania 38 already set, Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar will collide in a Winner Take All match for both the Universal and WWE Championships. This will be the first time in two years where McIntyre will not be involved in a title match—after winning his first WWE Championship against Lesnar at WrestleMania 36 and losing to Bobby Lashley in the opener of WrestleMania 37.

If McIntyre can finally free himself from the clutches of Corbin and Madcap Moss, how WWE addresses future plans for him after WrestleMania remains to be seen. Nonetheless, a win over Corbin would add credibility for Drew to chase a world title opportunity. Also, if Reigns were to successfully defeat Lesnar at the WrestleMania main event, this would leave an opening for McIntyre to challenge Reigns in the future.

For those who can recall, McIntyre and Reigns aren’t strangers to one other, as they’ve crossed paths on several occasions. However, Reigns has been successful against McIntyre in every singles match they’ve had against each other, which includes WrestleMania 35 and Survivor Series in 2020. They even had a tag-team match at Extreme Rules 2019, where McIntyre teamed with Shane McMahon and Reigns teamed with soon-to-be 2022 Hall of Fame inductee, The Undertaker.

While Drew was portrayed as a heel in most of those matchups, McIntyre would make for quality storytelling to feud with Reigns once again a babyface, with the narrative that he secures that elusive win over Tribal Chief.

It’s clear that Drew McIntyre’s window to become world champion again isn’t completely shut. He’s one of the more respectable workers in the company and succeeds the Eye Test by most standards. After all, SmackDown did lose a number of former world champions during last year’s draft, and it’s fair to reward a super who led as WWE Champion through much of the COVID-19 pandemic.

After returning to WWE four years after he was released, McIntyre won the NXT title and has since been a WWE and Raw tag-team champion twice. All that’s left for both he and his solid resume now, is to continue adding onto it. The first step in doing so is by getting his hand raised on Saturday, April 2nd.
