Sheamus deserves praise for some of the best work of his career
WWE’s roster is exceptionally deep, and even though all the people signed do not get featured in ways fans want, it’s important to recognize the contributions these individuals bring to television every week. It can be easy to overlook some of the performers, even after they’ve put forth years of dedicated work for the promotion. One such individual is Sheamus, who has found a way to extend his career and has become an unbelievably reliable member of the WWE roster.
It’s 2022, and Sheamus’s is performing as if he’s found the fountain of youth. Rewind the clock to mid-2019 and the former champion was off the television in April after suffering a concussion. The injury would keep him out until 2020, with many, including the performer himself thinking that his run with the company was over.
“Yeah, I did mate. I did. I’m not going to lie,” Sheamus said to Connor Casey of Comic Book dot com back in 2021. “I had a really, really bad concussion, and I had some other issues going on. But I went through the physical therapy. I got myself in great shape. Since I’ve been back, no problems whatsoever. I literally feel better than I did when I debuted though, which is crazy.”
When realizing Sheamus debuted back in 2008, it is crazy to think the 44-year-old feels better than he did way back then. But he’s performing as such as one of the foundational pieces of the WWE roster. He can be inserted into any feud, with any top star, and make fans believe every moment of the confrontation. His performances since returning in 2020 have been some of the best of any individual on the roster, and it’s important to recognize such.
WWE seemingly recognized that with a 132-day run as the WWE United States Champion back in 2021. It was Sheamus’s first time holding a singles title since 2015 when he was the WWE World Heavyweight Champion. Even though he’s been involved in angles at the top since he hasn’t had the opportunity to hold that championship again, but he shouldn’t be counted out as someone that could be framed as such, especially as WWE struggles to utilize its full roster due to creative ineptitude.
As the situations with Roman Reigns and Sasha Banks both show, it’s important to appreciate the performers who step into the ring while they are present. Sheamus may not be going anywhere in any time soon, but his career could have been cut short much earlier than anticipated. Thankfully, he’s still a fully present member of the WWE roster and he’s putting out some of the best work in his already famed career.
