Baron Corbin should receive better booking under new leadership
WWE is going through a shift with Triple H in charge of talent relations and creative. There’s palpable excitement and a “wait and see” narrative on both sides of the discussion. One thing fans want to see is for many of the top stars to be better booked on a consistent basis. There’s a wrestler that has received strong booking for years, but his use has still been less than acceptable often. Baron Corbin is one that everyone should keep an eye on because he could thrive with the opportunity presented under a new creative direction.
Corbin has remained a staple on the main roster for years. His call-up occurred in 2016 and it was clear that WWE had initial plans for him. He captured the Andre the Giant Memorial Trophy, Money in the Bank briefcase, and United States Championship. That momentum was quickly curtailed after failing to cash in the MITB briefcase.
Even though he’s remained on television and in prominent roles, that never translated into a serious presentation that would help him get over with fans. WWE leadership even went out of their way to blame him for dwindling ratings and fan satisfaction when it was clear that blame rested solely on the shoulders of Vince McMahon. Now with McMahon gone, Corbin should see the opportunity to become a top star even if it is for a short run under this new regime.
Corbin checks all the boxes when it comes to what WWE has sought out for its performers. He can work, with a diverse move set that can match the pace of any style placed in front of him. When given the time and space to prove it, Corbin has shown that he can hang with the best on the WWE roster. If bell-to-bell action is going to hold a more prominent position, then Corbin can fit within that space.
He can also work the microphone. Even when given heavily scripted promos, he was able to deliver them in a believable fashion (in the face of what was bad writing overall). It will be interesting to see how he performs in a space with less scripting, but that can be another boost to his value to the promotion.
Baron Corbin’s main roster run causes some to roll their eyes, but that has long been a testament to bad booking rather than a failure of the performer. With Triple H in charge, this could be the opportunity to build him into a top star that helps elevate the roster as a whole.
