The WWE women’s tag division still needs some work and here are three steps that will go a long way.

Since Triple H step up in power months ago, several improvements have hit the WWE roster. Big returns, improved matches, and another “relaunching” of NXT have fans excited for what is to come. Yet, everything isn’t in a better place, as the women’s tag team division is still seeking its big moment. Dakota Kai and Iyo Sky are two big-name attractions for the division, but it is still lacking beyond them and will not be seen as a big deal until some major changes take place.

Merge the main roster and NXT tag divisions

Thanks to the last three years of roster cuts, the women’s division was greatly impacted – especially the potential for tag teams. Losing individuals like Ruby Soho and Tegan Nox, along with duos like the IIconics severely limited what the division had to offer. That continued with breaking up teams on the main roster just weeks after they were formed.

The NXT women’s tag division didn’t see much improvement, even having an angle where Cora Jade tossed her title into the trashcan. Still, there’s value in taking the remaining groups in that brand and merging them into the main roster tag division. A feud between Kayden Carter and Katana Chance against Sky and Kai would have appeal and be a strong way to introduce the former to main roster viewers.

Establish stronger teams

One thing WWE was consistently good for was throwing together pairs of singles wrestlers and passing them off as a “team.” The practice was even more prevalent for the women’s division, where everyone was presented as “best friends” without any record of interacting before a random match. WWE has an opportunity to reshape its tag team division by building and sticking to actual pairings to establish an actual division. Carter and Chance are an example of what happens when a pairing is put together and established over time.

Some individuals like Wendy Choo or Tiffany Stratton stand out as singles stars, but looking across the roster names like Aliyah, Amari Miller, Tatum Paxley, and others could benefit from time in a tag team as the full division is flushed out.

Break the titles out of angles involving singles champions

WWE has done a decent job of making sure Sky and Kai are not relegated to being lackeys for Bayley. Even though the tag champions have been pinned in singles action, they’ve built both ladies up with solid wins in their own right. The same can’t be said for The Usos or Toxic Attraction for example, as both those teams paired with singles champions felt more like goons than anything else.

Getting the tag champions away from feuds that are tied to the singles champion will go a long way in developing this division as something to see in its own right. As the division is flushed out, this is a change that will take longer to establish but will have the biggest benefit in elevating the champions and the entire division.
