GUNTHER will get his main event push after WrestleMania 39
It will be interesting to see who rises to the top once WrestleMania is over and GUNTHER is near the top of candidates to see a major push.
It’s been common knowledge for some time that WWE higher-ups are extremely high on the current Intercontinental Champion, GUNTHER. In February, it was reported by multiple outlets that WWE’s Chief Content Officer Triple H, along with other key members of WWE management. Now, following last week’s edition of SmackDown, the plan is clear, GUNTHER will be getting a main event push after WrestleMania 39.
Two weeks ago on SmackDown, former world champions Sheamus and Drew McIntyre squared off in an intense one-on-one match to determine the GUNTHER’s opponent for WrestleMania.
Despite the fierce warriors giving it all they had, GUNTHER and the rest of Imperium ran in and spoiled the party. The IC champ hopped that a double disqualification would mean that he would be free of any opponent at the Showcase of the Immortals.
However, WWE authority figure Adam Pierce would have the last say on the matter. Instead informing the Austrian brute that he would have to face both the Scottish AND Celtic Warriors. To this fan, this signals that WWE is ready for the big move with GUNTHER. The script is right there for WWE to give the Austrian-born star a massive push following next weekend’s extravaganza.
The Ring General will have an epic triple-threat matcha at WrestleMania, with each man pushing each other to the absolute limit. WWE will ensure GUNTHER has a dominant performance, but they now have the opportunity to get the championship off the young star without needing him to take a direct and decisive loss.
While losing a champion wouldn’t typically signal a positive direction for a WWE Superstar, getting the mid-card title off of GUNTHER opens up the opportunity for him to jump into the main event scene.
Flanked by the rest of the Imperium, GUNTHER will prove to be a formidable force as he breaks into the main event scene. We know that GUNTHER can be the lead champion of a brand, evidenced by his record-breaking 870-day reign as NXT UK Champion. Since debuting on the main roster, we’ve seen him hold his own and prevail against former world champions Sheamus and Drew McIntyre, as well as having a strong performance in this year’s Royal Rumble match. Lasting over an hour from the #1 position, being last eliminated by WWE’s single most pushed superstar at the moment, Cody Rhodes.
The logical question on everyone’s mind becomes “who does GUNTHER go after?” Which is a question that is difficult to answer at the moment. This can only be answered after the main event of Night 2 of WrestleMania, where Roman Reigns defends his Undisputed WWE Universal Championship against Cody Rhodes. The results of this match will most likely determine the answer to two key questions:
- Will have two world titles or one?
- If Cody Rhodes wins, will Roman Reigns take an extended break from WWE?
Regardless of the outcome, GUNTHER stands to see a major rise in his stock in a post-WrestleMania version of the WWE.
