Adam Copeland vs Christian Cage is an intriguing story for AEW

Christian Cage and Adam Copeland have all the history needed to tell a winding tale that keeps the fans dialed in from start to finish. 

All Elite Wrestling does an excellent job telling some of the best stories in professional wrestling. “Hangman” Adam Page’s rise to the top and the story surrounding “Better Than You Bay Bay” are two strong examples. It will be interesting to see what the company does with Christian Cage versus Adam Copeland. Especially since many believe the former is in the best run of his professional career. Fans of both men and professional wrestling should get ready for what has the potential to be an interesting story to watch unfold.

Copeland and Cage have decades of history together. They were seven-time WWF World Tag Team Champions and one of the top teams in the history of the industry. But even as they put on some of the best tag team wrestling of their time, there was always a clear understanding that a split would come. Edge was seen as the “Shawn Michaels” of the duo, with Cage being presented as the “lesser” of the two. That angle played a part in their on-screen stories but was also the perception of WWE leadership which translated into said presentation.

Even as Cage broke out on his own, picking up multiple championships along the way, he remained a step behind Copeland. That alone is the angle that will build this story in AEW. Copeland’s first words back after debuting at AEW WrestleDream hinted toward the idea that he wanted to rekindle the days of their tag team dominance. Cage responded with a simple “Go [expletive] yourself.” The perfect response from Cage hinting back to their 2001 feud.

There is a lot to watch for as this story develops. Cage is enjoying the best run of his career. It’s clear he’s one of, if not the best heel in professional wrestling today. He’s found main-event success in AEW and captured more singles gold in his return than Copeland has done in his. Cage has no reason to want or need to have Copeland at his side. So, the idea that he would jump at the opportunity is all that’s needed to kick off a feud between the two.

No one would have guessed that Adam Copeland versus Christian Cage would be the premier story in All Elite Wrestling in 2023, but here we are. With decades worth of moments to draw from, it will be intriguing to watch how AEW tells a story between these two men and where it leads them both during this phase of their careers.
