The retirement bug is hitting hard across professional wrestling. Sting’s storied sendoff is one of the best moments of this year. Bryan Danielson’s was 180 degrees the opposite in the emotional department. John Cena and Hiroshi Tanahashi are the next two greats scheduled to walk away. And then there’s Bill Goldberg. The former champion has made it clear he’s set to retire and he has an opponent in mind.

While appearing on ESPN College Gameday, Goldberg announced his impending retirement. He hinted at a possible battle with WWE World Heavyweight Champion, GUNTHER. This would play off their confrontation at WWE Bad Blood, where the current champion made it a point to run down Goldberg, his son, and all his accolades.

“In 2025, Goldberg is having his retirement match,” Goldberg said. “We know who the frontrunner is, but in 2025 Goldberg makes his retirement match. No date. No time. But we will see.”

Bill Goldberg was one of the “break in case of emergency” legends that Vince McMahon would bring back all too often. He last competed in 2022, losing to Roman Reigns in six minutes at Elimination Chamber. But before that, he was brought back to have a split feud with Bobby Lashley, lose to Drew McIntyre, and lose to Braun Strowman at WrestleMania 36.

Fans’ outlook on Goldberg is often mixed. He was at the height of his power in WCW, when he went on a streak that helped make that company the success it was during that time. But once he joined WWE in 2003 the aura was quickly eroded. He came back suddenly in 2016 but the magic was truly gone.
