Mercedes Mone is right about AEW hosting an all-women's PPV
Women’s wrestling is a draw. While some may argue that statement, there are several examples from this and recent years that show women’s wrestling and the personalities within it have the ability to pull in the eyeballs. This is why so many fans get upset when it is not positioned in a way for success, like the males on the roster. The idea of an all-women’s PPV event comes up every year, with WWE Evolution being the only attempt in a mainstream promotion. Well, Mercedes Mone is calling for All Elite Wrestling to do one as well, and it’s an idea that should at least be tested.
“We have a roster full of wrestlers, we have a long list of women that can have an all-woman pay-per-view, so I think just given the chance and the opportunity, and if Tony [Khan] sees that, I don’t see why not, we can have a women’s revolution here in AEW,” Mone said while speaking to Tom & Eli on Battleground. “The woman have just been killing it out of the park every single week."
Mone has some experience when it comes to all-women’s shows. She was a part of Evolution which took place back on October 28, 2018. She, then known as Sasha Banks, teamed with Bayley and Natalya to defeat the Riott Squad of Liv Morgan, Ruby Riott, and Sarah Logan.
That was the first, and only all-women’s show held by WWE. In the eyes of many, it was put on because women were not allowed on the first cards held in Saudi Arabia, and fans hit WWE hard with backlash for that and many other aspects of those shows.
But six years have passed since then. Wrestling is in an entirely different place. Business is booming in WWE. All Elite Wrestling is thriving. Momentum is growing in other companies as well. And still, major promotions hold off from doing an all-women’s show.
What would an all-women’s show look like in AEW? Well, of course, Mercedes Mone and Mariah May would have to be the anchors of the PPV. As the TBS and Women’s World Champions respectively, their stories would be two of the top draws. Mone versus Kris Statlander would be an excellent match. This would be a great opportunity to do Mariah May versus Toni Storm II and include Mina Shirakawa in the mix somehow. Ring of Honor Women’s World Champion, ATHENA must also be a part of the show as she’s been the best women’s world champion across wrestling in the eyes of many.
Filling out the rest of the card would be easy. AEW boasts names like Deonna Purrazzo, Thunder Rosa, Kamille, Hikaru Shida, Jamie Hayter, Serena Deeb, Nyla Rose, Queen Aminata, Kiera Hogan, Red Velvet, Billie Starkz, Riho, Willow Nightingale, Yuka Sakazaki, Sky Blue, Saraya and several others. This roster is bursting with the type of talent that could carry a show. Success is right there for the making.
Women’s wrestlers deserve the same opportunities as their male counterparts. That means putting on the shows that fans want to see. All Elite Wrestling has the roster to hold a women’s show and Mercedes Mone is right that it must happen.
