Big Bill could be a bigger star for AEW
All Elite Wrestling has an opportunity to build new main event stars, as the roster is packed with talented and experienced names who haven’t reached that point. Big Bill is an individual who has a complex history in professional wrestling. But it’s a story that comes with the highs and lows that would make him an interesting character at the main event level.
Seeing Big Bill in AEW should bring a smile to wrestling fans’ faces. Not because he’s an exceptional babyface, and especially not because he’s paired with Chris Jericho. It’s because a short while back, Bill was in dire straits.
Rewind the clock back to 2018 when he was released from the WWE. This came right as it seemed like his singles run was heating up. Bill would cite that he had issues with anxiety and alcohol depression that played a part in his release.
“I’ve been pretty open about my problems,” Big Bill said while speaking on the Barstool Rasslin’ podcast. “My alcoholism was horrendous, now four years sober, going to be coming up on five years sober around the Super Bowl upcoming year. It’s been quite a journey. I mean, my career, ups and then downs, ups, downs, and now I’m definitely on an upswing. But I feel like now I have a second chance. A second chance, not just at wrestling, but a second chance at life.”
That’s the type of story that a company like AEW could use to shine a major light on Big Bill. Think back to how over he was during his time with Enzo in WWE. That all came falling down and he went through some low points. Now, he looks like a million bucks and stands out as one of the biggest men on the AEW roster. A big man that has charisma, can work the microphone, and is skilled enough to have an effective match.
The pathway to building Bill as a main event star is right there, pretty easy to carve out. His last match in WWE was against none other than current AEW World Champion, Bryan Danielson. He could use that as a catalyst as to why he wants to be the man to end Danielson’s career while taking that title from him. Of course, he would fail. But that opens the door for him to do battle with Jericho – a feud that would immediately turn him into a babyface in the company.
Big Bill is one of those background individuals who should actually have a bigger point of focus. He’s turned his life around in a way that is a compelling story, and there’s an opportunity to use that to build him into a bigger star for AEW.
