Odyssey Jones inserted into a big spot with The New Day
Fans were worried when news broke that The New Day would face AOP on the August 5 edition of WWE Raw. All signs pointed toward the idea that the famed group would finally split after 10 years together. While that isn’t totally off the table, a swerve occurred when Odyssey Jones made his way out to save Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods as they were attacked by The Final Testament. Who is the big man? He’s an interesting wrinkle in what was already developing into an intriguing storyline.
Standing 6’ 5” and weighing in at 405 pounds, Jones certainly brings the size necessary to help square up with members of The Final Testament. He caught the ideas of many when he was initially introduced on WWE NXT. He made it deep in the Breakout Tournament before losing to Carmelo Hayes in the finals. Jones would have a few other matches but would never get the momentum running in his direction after his time was cut short due to a knee injury.
Jones was surprisingly drafted to WWE Raw during the 2023 WWE Draft but would never show up on television. A full year later he was drafted by Raw again, leading to people making jokes that he’d be drafted every year without wrestling an actual match on television.
Sure, Jones was a big surprise in this angle, but he’s a perplexing addition to it as well. According to Cagematch, he’s had a total of 70 matches in his career. That includes nine in 2024. His last match on television was against Dijak on the April 4 episode of WWE NXT. To potentially insert him into a faction like The New Day and in an angle that has so many eyes on it is perplexing. Jones is a big personality, but he’s very green in a spot like this. He came with some big praise from Big E after the segment.
“The big man looked phenomenal! A star is born,” Big E posted on Twitter. “Odyssey made a lot of new fans tonight!”
Fans were certainly intrigued and an angle that most weren’t looking forward to suddenly has momentum going forward. Here’s to hoping that Odyssey Jones lives up to this big moment.
