Sheamus could get one last title run in WWE NXT
Sheamus is the gift that keeps on giving in professional wrestling. WWE can insert him into any angle and rest assured that he’ll deliver a banger that will leave fans and critics talking. He’s 46 years old and his time in the industry will come to an end. But before that happens, WWE must find a way to give him one last meaningful run with a championship.
WWE has a stacked roster. There are several established names like Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns, Drew McIntyre, CM Punk, and others that are poised to grab a championship within the next few months to a year. GUNTHER and Cody Rhodes have their work cut out for them if they are going to maintain a grip on the titles that they’re holding. When looking at how the pecking order is laid out, it’s hard to see where Sheamus would fit to get one last run with a championship.
This is where WWE NXT comes into play. Sheamus has a solid position on the WWE Monday Night Raw roster but imagine if he took a quick detour to Tuesday nights. Now, NXT shouldn’t be considered a “downgrade” for main roster competitors. It’s been a spot where several top performers were able to go for a stint or two to do great work. Think back to the runs that both Becky Lynch and The New Day had while in NXT. They were able to capture championships and contribute to the developmental roster at the same time. Sheamus could have a similar impact.
The bridge to bring Sheamus to WWE NXT is already there. Pete Dunne. Sheamus and Dunne continue to go back and forth in an angle on SmackDown, while Dunne is focused on the title picture in NXT. The scenario is set for Sheamus to show up on Tuesdays to cost Dunne a big match. From there, they could battle in NXT for a bit before Sheamus turns his focus to Ethan Page and the NXT Championship. Putting Sheamus over Page wouldn’t be a considerable shock, as it could be a victory to help further build the roster.
Sheamus as NXT Champion would be a big deal. Think about some of the matches that would be possible. Oba Femi versus Sheamus – yes book that match immediately. And of course, someone will take that title off Sheamus at some point, giving them a big rub over a future Hall of Famer.
In a perfect world, individuals who contribute to a promotion and industry would get the send-off they deserve. That doesn’t happen all too often and it’s a shame. Someone like Sheamus should get one more title run before his time in the WWE is over and WWE NXT can be the opening to make that happen.
