All Elite Wrestling seems to be on the cusp of a breakthrough with its women’s division. Fans have long wanted Tony Khan to improve how the division is booked, and it looks like things are headed in the right direction. The promotion is primed to bring in big names, the matches are getting more time and build, plus multiple stories is developing within that division. With all that positivity on the horizon, there’s one woman that should get a big push in 2024. One that should lead to her holding one of the titles under the company’s banner. And that woman is Willow Nightingale.
Willow Nightingale is a bright spot in professional wrestling. She’s one of those individuals who can be a generational-level babyface character. Plus, she’s excellent in the ring and can hang with anyone bell-to-bell. There was a time when AEW had the opportunity to put all its momentum behind her, but like many things in the promotion, it inexplicably fell to the wayside. But that’s then, and this is now. There are so many ways Nightingale can have a breakthrough in 2024 under the AEW.
First, the potential signing of Mercedes Mone should be big for Nightingale. Why? It was in the match for the NJPW STRONG Women’s Championship when Mone was injured. She hasn’t competed since May and the story could be told that Mone’s done nothing but fantasize about getting back at Nightingale for that moment. That’s a build and a match that could easily headline an episode of AEW Dynamite.
Second, depending on how the women’s division shakes out, Nightingale could excel as a champion with either title. Again, her initial fan reaction showed that the people were ready to get behind her. If 2024 is truly the year when AEW makes a stronger play for the top women’s free agents, then that could impact where Nightingale falls in the roster depth chart. This is why it would be a big benefit to allow the women’s division to have a Face of the Revolution ladder match and Continental Classic to shake out the top contenders among the group. Nightingale must be involved with and win at least one of those two opportunities this year.
Willow Nightingale is the consummate fan favorite on the AEW roster. If Tony Khan is truly listening to what fans want, then she should be near the top of the list for a big run in the new year.
