The importance of The New Day story on WWE Monday Night Raw

The date of this writing is Monday, November 25, 2024. It is the last Monday in November, a month which was meant to mark the ten-year anniversary of The New Day. One of the most iconic stables in professional wrestling history has been together in a way that the business would have never realized it needed. Yet, the on-screen story is pushing the idea that Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods, and even Big E are coming to an end. It’s a moment, and an angle, which should get its full respect, regardless of how it plays out.

The New Day has stood the test of time. And it’s standing that test of time that makes this arc so important and powerful. They’ve represented a brotherhood in the ring, and the millions of fans who share their identity outside of it. They represent a bond of brotherhood that couldn’t be fractured. At least up until this point.

That brings the conversation to what may happen on the next episode of WWE Monday Night Raw. This story can go one of two different ways.

First, the scene is already set for Woods and Kingston to come to blows, finally severing their ties together. In professional wrestling, it seems like a major tag team split happens at least once a year. A duo that was iconic in all their achievements and fan response, split to go their separate ways. Kingston and Woods brawling in the ring or backstage wouldn’t be a major surprise, as that’s where the story has been heading, but it would still be a moment that would drop jaws and bring some to tears. That’s the importance of this faction at play.

Kofi Kingston versus Xavier Woods is a main event level angle without any championships in play. It will be interesting to see how they are booked and where they are booked, as fans will want to see any type of full-on angle get the type of respect they deserve.

On the other hand, imagine if this is an angle that results in Woods and Kingston getting into an altercation, only for Big E to come back and get them back into focus. The duo hasn’t been the same since his departure years ago. And perhaps it is his return that brings them back together.

There’s no word on Big E’s status or return from the tragic injury he suffered on March 11, 2022. He’s been open about his struggle to get cleared, and the attempted treatments he’s undergone. One thing this iteration of WWE has done well is keep important secrets like this under wraps, so it is understandable that some are looking to this moment in hopes that Big E comes back. But the power of that moment would do nothing less than drive all three men back to the top of the card where they belong.

Storytelling plays an important part in sports entertainment and professional wrestling. Right now, one of the best stories in the industry involves the potential split between Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods. However it plays out, these are the moments that fans have embraced this industry for generations.
