The Rock vs Roman Reigns will be the biggest match in history
It’s November and the lead into WrestleMania season is right around the corner. Once Survivor Series passes later this month, fans will begin to gear up for The Royal Rumble, which is basically the kickoff leading into the massive annual event. This year, expectations are for The Rock and Roman Reigns to come face-to-face and battle for the “Head of the Table” moniker. This moment will have the opportunity to be the biggest match in professional wrestling history.
Both The Rock and Roman Reigns have hinted at this match for years. In odd ways, it felt both inevitable and impossible. The Rock was on top of the world as one of the most successful actors in the business, until he wasn’t. Some major box office flops, topped off by the debacle that was Black Adam hit The Rock’s value hard. Perception is that this opened the door for his return to professional wrestling, a space where the fanbase would quickly embrace him and he could use that momentum once he was ready to step back into major projects. And that’s exactly what happened.
The transition to The Final Boss brought back a version of The Rock that fans didn’t know they missed. This transitioned into what was one of the biggest moments in the industry this year. Cody Rhodes finished the story, but to do so he had to go through The Rock and every other member of The Bloodline. The final chapter of that story will present The Rock as the man who turned Solo Sikoa against Reigns and unleashed members of the family who were long shunned like Jacob Fatu. The story is there. The setup is nearly complete and the match at WrestleMania will be the payoff.
Now, don’t expect this to be a technical classic. This will be a match right out of the Attitude Era but at a much slower pace. The Rock is 52 years old and can’t take a bump like he used to. Roman Reigns already wrestles at a slow pace, and he’s going to slow it down even more so in this one. This will be one of those matches for the fans as they scream their heads off at the idea of the match they’ve been wanting to see for years. This will be one of those moments when WWE thrives at what it does best, sports entertainment.
This is a needle-mover of a match. A once-in-a-lifetime ordeal. None of the titles will be involved, as they shouldn’t be at this point. Neither man needs nor should they have them at this point. This match is all about the story behind why the family is split between its two biggest names.
This is the type of match WrestleMania is made for and one that will move units. When the dust settles, The Rock versus Roman Reigns will be the biggest wrestling match in the history of the business.
