Who Will The Undertaker Face At Wrestlemania 31?
By Becca Cook
After The Undertaker’s loss at WrestleMania 30 to Brock Lesnar, many fans believed that we had just witnessed his final match. However, it has been reported by Wrestlezone that he told a fan yesterday that he “is not ruling out” wrestling at this year’s ‘Mania. We also reported that he is featured on the promotional truck for WrestleMania 31 alongside Roman Reigns and AJ Lee.
If he is scheduled to have a match on March 31st, who would be his opponent?
An Undertaker/Sting feud is at the top of the list of “dream matches” for many wrestling fans. The two have different styles of wrestling, but The Undertaker’s “deadman” character and Sting’s crow gimmick seem like the perfect match-up. Fans have been imagining this match for two decades, and Sting is now with WWE. If it does not happen now it never will. Both men will be in their 50s by ‘Mania. Neither has many more matches left, and neither is anywhere near the skill level they were at during their peak. As one of the most highly anticipated matches of all-time, the risk of it disappointing fans would be high. Both men are brilliant story-tellers, but they have been very hit-and-miss in terms of their match quality over the past few years. If they cross paths, it could either be a match of the year candidate or a complete anti-climax.
The most logical kayfabe reason for Undertaker to fight again would be for a re-match against Brock Lesnar. Lesnar broke The Undertaker’s twenty-one WrestleMania victory streak this year, and Undertaker wanting vengeance is a storyline that pretty much writes itself. With six months to go until WrestleMania, Lesnar is the current WWE World Heavyweight Champion, and there are no signs of him dropping the title any time soon. This would rule out a re-match between the two this year, as it would make no sense writing Undertaker into a title match. If Lesnar is however no longer in the title picture by the Royal Rumble, the probability of a re-match would definitely increase.

John Cena is the face of the WWE and has been for years, yet he’s never faced Undertaker on the grandest stage of them all. It’s one of the few things that he has not done in the company. Cena and The Undertaker have only crossed paths once in WWE – briefly feuding in 2003. Even though the streak is no more, a match between the two is still appealing to both the casual fan and regular watchers – to some, the feud would be even more enjoyable now because there is no chance that Cena could be the one to break the streak. The options for Cena’s opponent this year will be limited, so Undertaker could be one of the few viable choices.
Of course, it’s still not certain whether The Undertaker is going to return, and if a return would be for the best. Recent reports say that he is still in bad health after the concussion he suffered at this year’s WrestleMania, when others state that he is completely well and has been in training since July. Only time will tell if he has one more match in him, or if the end of the streak signified the end of his career.
